This is a favourite dog walk for me. Parking at the free wickham station car park there are several great walks. If the weather has been wet go right along the old railway line because the camber on the track and the gravel laid down ensures this walk is dry underfoot. You will pass over the river meon and out of the village, through wickham golf course then a beautiful vineyard to your right. There you will find a low wooden fence there to stop the horses on the bridal path from going any further. It doesn't need to stop you as the walk has a lot more to offer. From here you are in country side proper its quiet apart from the bird song. The only downside to this walk is when you get to the wire fence where the track meets the mainline railway you have to turn around and walk back the way you came. No great hardship as it's a beautiful peaceful place to be.. There are several other fantastic walks from this car park. By turning left the track is much wider and busier. Also shared by cyclists and more popular with families. But if you walk up until the railway crosses the river and go down the bank on the right you can get back to the car park be following the river meon a beautiful ancient chalk stream with crystal clear water. Coming back this way there are a couple of paths that will get you back to the trail but if you want to find your way all the way back along the river turn right when you get to a sharp turn in the river this is where you start up the bank then follow the edge of the field right and vola you are back where you started from. This walk can also be done in reverse. Just from the car park cross the trail you will see the paths and keep left. Hint really keep left so you are walking along the side of the field. Don't be in a rush to get to the river or you will just find yourself backtracking out ...
Read moreBeautiful old railway route let down by the seemingly hundreds of thousands of people who all think it's a great idea to take their family's on a cycle ride to that specific location rather than thinking slightly more creatively about cycling spots. Having said this; I suppose it's a safe route if you enjoy swerving round the elderly and slamming into the hundreds of dogs off their leads and having to avoid other cyclists hurtling at you in the other direction. Also a let down is the lack of access to the river from signs screaming "PRIVATE FISHING" Despite there never being anyone ever there actually fishing. Wickham and the surrounding countryside is beautiful though. Just never ever go on a weekend, especially a Sunday the market village quickly becomes Glastonbury but without the music and with cars...
