My mother and I drove down while visiting family in Henry & Benton Counties in July of this year. We saw a brochure while visiting the area a year or two ago, but were unable to make the drive to Adamsville at the time. When planning this past trip, we decided it would be a must to stop here.
My mom was a young girl during Buford's reign as Sheriff of McNairy County, and while driving told me that my grandfather had taken her and my uncle to see the movies in theaters when they were younger. I had heard of Buford, knew his story a bit in passing, but only saw the 2004 remake (I can't even really call it that, after seeing the originals) prior to my visit.
We made the drive, and immediately my mother became emotional and excited. She was finally going to the place where her childhood hero had lived. We walked in and were greeted by a woman, Shirley (who attended school and grew up with Buford). We watched a video and toured the home that was left exactly as it was the day the Buford's life was taken from him (in my humble opinion).
The energy and history within the home is evident, featuring pictures, the family car and the burnt Corvette in the garage, and a gift shop in the basement. After walking through, I immediately became interested in the life of Buford Pusser. My mother purchased the Walking Tall movies from the gift shop, and we spent the rest of our day watching them together. Such emotion. Both Joe Don Baker and Bo Svenson did wonderful things portraying the life of Buford. I've since spent a lot of my time reading up on Buford and learning his life; I feel as if I knew him, though I wasn't even a thought at the time of his reign as Sheriff.
I'd highly recommend, whether you're a fan or not, whether you've seen the original...
Read moreI toured here 15 or 16 years ago and had a great experience, and enjoyed it thoroughly. I took my 70 year old mother today as she had never been and always wanted go. Wasn’t the greatest experience this time. Obviously we had the same tour guide that some others here had. One lady was super sweet and courteous, but we didn’t have her. And thanks for her being there. The shorter lady with grey hair was ours and she was rushing through and being rude and cranky, I hated asking questions almost immediately, as every answer we got was sarcastic and we were talked down to.Also there were signs stating take all the pictures you want, but when I tried to take a photo of a certain photo , she objected and talked down to me as if I were trash, I did not appreciate it. She was also us watching as if we were shoplifters. Doubt I will ever return or recommend the museum to anyone else. I hate this, because I truly enjoy visiting. Luckily my mom still enjoyed going and wasn’t as disappointed as much as I expected her to be, but still this hurt me as I really wanted it to be an enjoyable experience,...
Read moreWe were a little thrown off when we approached the museum not knowing what to expect. This is Buford Pusser's home, left almost exactly the way it was when he died. So be prepared to wander through a 1970's ranch home with all the 1970's amenities still chugging away. Our guide was a lady who had grown up with him, and went to high school with him, so the tour had an intimacy to it that we didn't expect, but made the tour that much more enjoyable. His clothes are still layed out, his totaled corvette is parked back in the garage. You get a very eery feel for what and who the man was. So if you're a fan, and even if you're not,...
