A must visit if you love nature and are stopping by Anchorage. The views from the top are absolutely stunning. Do be prepared that the trail can be a little tough. Went in the first week of June and the front side of the mountain was still snow covered in many places. For an experienced hiker, I was able to get it done in sneakers with no special equipment and I saw many others from young children to seniors able to make it up with some difficulty. I would recommend having the right equipment, some micro spikes or some outdoor boots with a deep tread for snowy conditions would come in handy for those slippery areas.
The reward at the top however is well worth the journey. I was able to do it in ~1 hour each way but allocate 1.5-2 hours for beginners. Also make sure to check out the “back” trail otherwise known as the sunny side flattop mountain trail. Talking to others, that direction was much easier without many snowy or slippery sections. Parking is $5 for all day parking payable with a credit card or cash. Plenty of parking to accommodate everyone but if you arrive at peak periods in the early afternoon, you might have some trouble finding parking. The later afternoon clears out the parking lot a little bit and with daylight until midnight, still plenty of time left to hike...
Read moreA wonderful place to launch into the Chugach mountains! Go right on power line trail for a access to trails (little O'Malley is one of my favs), streams, and lakes. Go left and downhill bicycle an ENTIRE Mountain!
I usually ride my mountain bike from power line to the prospect heights trailhead, which leads to some amazing singletracks! These single tracks lead to hilltop ski area, which in the summer is home to a great frisbee golf course. From here you can find your way to gasoline trail which takes you the Campbell creek area which has tons of semi-hilly (nothing too extreme) riding all the way into town. I usually have a buddy pick me up from Tudor.
This trip is about a 3 hour deal that takes you from mountains to single tracks to forests. I've seen a moose almost every time I've biked this part of the world (about 10 times) and I definitely recommend bringing bear spray, as you pass by a "high bear activity" sign one you get to the Campbell airstrip area (there has been attacks in this area).
You could also climb to the top of flattop for a great view of anchorage, but to be honest, it gets rough at the end of the climb, and there tons is peaks to...
Read moreParking lot is small, if it's busy you'll find yourself circling around for an empty spot. Within 5 min from the parking lot at the base level you can already enjoy beautiful views. Hike up in 30min at a fast pace without rests or an hour at a leisurely pace with resting times. The last and steeper portion of the hike is more of a scramble. There are signs for easier routes that I've yet to explore. Expect some heavier foot traffic on the way down as it can be a little tricky. The rocks and dirt can be a little loose. Ive seen people losing their balance and falling in the dirt a few times. During the right time of the year you can see kids with buckets scouting for blueberries. Making it to the top is quite rewarding,...
