Kroschel Wildlife Center, Haines, Alaska. This center is a bit hard to get to but certainly worth the effort. First it's about a 20 mile ferry ride out of Skagway Alaska to Haines. Then you have to travel the 28 miles north of Haines, Alaska past the Chilkoot River onto Mosquito Lake Road. If you are lucky enough to get 'Joe' the bus driver you are off to a great & entertaining start. This tour was fantastic. You are guaranteed to see all the Alaskan animals in their natural habitat and given all the info about each animal. Finally, after 3 trips to Alaska, we have seen all the animals from the area. Some species include grizzly bear, wolf, moose, lynx, fox, reindeer, porcupine, snowy owl, wolverine, sable, bobcat, and more! We fed the big moose (Karen) carrots and touched lots of the animals. A must do if you get close to the area. The tour is also an education in the importance of certain (or all) animals in each environment. Links between the way humans changed each animals diets and then, in turn, how eating these animals affected humans. I never knew about the connection of Wolves and lyme disease - but now I do. Bravo Kroschel & team...
Read moreFive stars isn't enough. We took the ferry from Skagway (45min one way) then a bus ride from Haines. WELL WORTH IT. If you have a chance to do this, and can drag yourself away from the diamond shops and tourist traps long enough to experience some real people and real wildlife, you'll experience things that you cannot anywhere else! When was the last time you petted a porcupine, or touched a wolverine? When was the last time you spent 90 minutes with a passionate & hilarious filmmaker/ ethologist/entertainer (think David Attenborough crossed with Robin Williams). The previous two times we were in Skagway we couldn't fit in the trip to Haines to get in. We didn't know what we were missing. Come on folks, try harder to experience Alaska!! Oh, and bring your GoPro, you just might get an unexpected surprise! Steve, thanks for the awesome...
Read moreThe best I have ever been to, and I have seen them all. Steve and Mario have a one-of-a-kind, interactive, and entertaining tour. Interactive with all animals - all hand-raised by this incredible man. I learned more from Steve and Mario than all other tours, zoos, or any animal-related place I have ever been to. If you have children, this is a MUST see and very reasonable. If you love animals and wildlife, you have to see this. These gentlemen were amazing. Very touching how they have devoted their lives to this cause without proper funding. The ONLY place in our world you will ever see anyone lovingly, hold a wolverine in his arms. I was very moved by what they do, not to mention their stories about their experiences. I plan to go back to Haines just to see them and take my...
