This operation is such a fabulous, underrated gem staffed by lovely people who clearly are passionate about our local railway history. The cars are very well maintained, the prices are reasonable, and the short railway path (I think the longest ride we've been on round trip is 45 minutes) is bursting with beautiful shots of the Appalachian mountain's south face and plenty of foliage. The preserved station that you walk through to board the train has restrooms, a model train display (in a rail car!), an old ticket booth, and a staffed refreshment stand with nice outdoor seating via umbrella-covered picnic tables.
The folks were even kind enough to allow us to bring some decorations and a cake in a picnic grove so we could sing happy birthday. It was a very special day that only happened because of the kindness of WK&S.
We can't recommend it enough. If you want to enjoy a quaint weekend ride, or want to take in the foliage, but want more peace and quiet than jostling through Jim Thorpe, this is the obvious selection. Our favorite train experience so far has been the apple picking ride since it drops you off at the back of County Line Orchards, but all have been excellent.
As a bonus, when you're finished with the train ride stop at Wannamaker's General Store on your way out of town -- easily the best food spot around this railroad. Great coffee, snacks,...
Read moreWe were looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon, and after Googling "Events in the Lehigh Valley" we stumbled upon something called, The Bow Wow Express. I bought three tickets...two adults and one doggie. Little did we know, this experience would create memories to last a lifetime. A local dog rescue has a relationship with the train, and dogs/humans get to ride together during the Bow Wow events! How cool and amazing is that?!? We brought our lab, Lexi along and were we surprised! There were owners with their pets everywhere! It was the coolest thing EVER! The rescue has a little table set up for donations/free stuff for your doggie. There's an adorable and efficient concession stand, with a great variety of tasty food to purchase, and dogs get a hot dog for free! There's a little gift shop, lots of picnic tables, restroom facilities, and grassy areas. Then there's the gorgeous train and the sweetest staff ever. We all had an unexpected, wonderful day. There are also events/activities happening on the train all the time, so check it out! Plus, for a day of fun, this particular experience cost us less than $30.00...now that is amazing. Personally, the experience is worth way more than that so feel free to make an extra donation! Don't miss out on taking a ride on this...
Read moreThis is a very nice little railroad. I haven't been there for 16 years and I had seen they were having their 60th celebration; I thought this was the time to revisit. Even though they are open mainly on seasonal Sundays and the ride today was supposed to be steam; I still had a great time. The diesel locomotives that they had were just as good. I originally planned just to ride the 1pm. But, the ride was so awesome that I decided to ride the 3pm as well. You can ride in the standard coach, gondola car, or even in the caboose! The ride is short, but very scenic and smooth. A very unique way to travel that's for sure! They also have a nice little snack bar where you can eat food like hotdogs, bbq sandwichs, candy, and even soft pretzels! They also have a small, but neat HO display of trains as well. Finally, they have a small souvenir store as well where you can buy stuff like shirts and toys. Not to mention everyone working there were nice as well. Overall, this was a nice hidden gem that Berks County has to offer. I recommend going there and I am definitely planning to go...
