Fort Foote Park in Fort Washington, Maryland, is a National Park Service site featuring Civil War-era earthworks and two massive 15-inch Rodman cannons, offering historical exploration and Potomac River views with free admission. The park preserves remnants of the fort built to defend Washington, D.C., and provides a quiet, historic getaway with walking trails. #fortwashingtonmaryland #americanhistory #cannons #dmvlife #philiptamorria

This is a fairly under the radar national park. It is however better than I was expecting. There is plenty of parking and the trails are short and easy. There are numerous information plaques around the park (I’ve included pictures of most of them). There are a few cannons too which are much larger than I was expecting. I do wish that the park was a little more developed with more picnic areas and maybe a small visitor center. This park lacks a unigrid (brochure) which makes me a little sad.

The parking lot is currently closed yet is still accessible. I'm not sure how Covid effects our ability to safely park in a wooded area, but you're offered to brave passing cars and to park in a ditch. I had my Maltese and daughter with me. We could tell early on another hiker was in the area with a pet. After seeing the cannons and wanting to explore closer to the water, the smell of marijuana became quite strong. We decided not to meet our smoking hiker friend and left the trail early.

Our recent visit to the park was deeply disappointing. As furloughed federal employees, we anticipated a peaceful walk without complications. Unfortunately, that was not the case. We parked near the entrance, which was closed, and joined a colleague to get coffee while waiting for another coworker to arrive. Upon returning, all of us was issued an $100 parking citation, and three others—including myself—received $100 tickets.

We were informed that parking signage was clearly posted, but upon inspection, this was not accurate. The only visible sign was placed far from where we parked, making it difficult to notice. The officer who issued the citations was abrupt and dismissive, offering no warning or opportunity to relocate the vehicles. One colleague was standing beside her car and could have easily moved it if asked, yet she was ticketed without discussion.

We strongly believe these citations were unwarranted and hope this matter will be reviewed with fairness and...

Spent many summer night's here as a kid in the 80's. With the beach being right at the bottom of the hill from the Ft. It was a blast! As kid's we use to play war here and on the beach. Awesome memories! I remember when National Harbor was supposed to be called Port America! It took some time to go through. In the mean time we spent our summer's playing on the beach, swimming, fishing and building bond fires right on the shore line of the waters edge. So many great memories from this place. Now as being an adult and driving over the New W.W Bridge! And looking to see what the River Front has become, always takes me back to a kid in the 80's and 90's. P.S the lagoon between the fort and the old entry/Exit at Cagel Cr, had the biggest snapping turtles I'd ever seen! They were as big around as full size...
