Absolutely love Bunker Hills! It is a very good park and only getting better!
Things to do: a lot of paved and non-paved trails, many picnic pavilions for your large or small gatherings with grills near them, multiple jungle-gyms for the kids, frisbee golf, open fields for miscellaneous activities, an activities building for indoor events and gatherings, Bunker Beach waterpark (wave pool, water slides, kid area), the full service campground, horseback riding, multiple veterans memorials as great places to reflect and be thankful, and access to a dog park, are very range, and golf course.
There is a fee side (daily or yearly pass) of the park where you pay the county Park fee (some reciprocity with other counties like Washington County...etc). The fee side gives you access to most of the park to include waterpark, camping, parking near the picnic pavilions, the trails, frisbee golf, etc.
The FREE side has parking up by the activities center and the horse barn, where you can access the rest of the park (with a short walk) via the trail system. You can get everywhere on the paved trails, but there are a few non-paved trails to choose in certain areas.
The park is well kept and very big. With so many options to choose from, it is a great destination for a one stop shop to get out of the house.Plus plenty of restrooms around the...
Read moreVibes were immaculate. For the most part it was a great afternoon, lots of people, but we did come out on the 4th of July. I want to inform you that if you plan to do this, parking is $7, a locker is $10, and for entry it was $20/person. If you go early (11AM) you should be prepared to fight with traffic and unruly people. You will wait for a parking permit, then park, then wait in another line to buy tickets to get in. Otherwise, parking was decently easy, the line to buy tickets wasn’t too long of a wait but we did stand in line for about 10-15 minutes. If you buy tickets online you can “skip” the line but if there’s a ton of online ticket buyers that will create another line before entry. I’m not sure if you can leave and come back in, however our parking permit was good all day. There’s at least two snack bars accessible and lots of stuff for the kids to do. There’s a wave pool and a lazy river for adults; and several swimming zones and splash pads for the babies! Plan wisely...
Read moreI went and walked the trails for a good three hours the other day and I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of it. The foot/bike paths are well maintained and they intersect several times with the dirt horse trails. This region of Minnesota is in a deciduous dominated biome and wild flower plains, and there are a lot of wildflowers growing. There are sporadic Cedars growing throughout, and although they are out-competed by other trees, I still enjoy seeing them amongst the taller oaks.
It was $7 for a day pass which was a fair price. I guess the one thing that I didn't love as a hiker was the nearby water park playing contemporary music rather loudly, and as the water park was closing the staff rather loudly gave closing calls over the PA system a few different times. Not exactly the ambience I want to hear when hiking in such a nice natural area, but I'm sure it's great for the kids so I'm not too upset about it. I still...
