I knew I had truly moved West after visiting AI. And witnessing the Mars like scenery of the pre-historic salt lake and its surroundings was memorizing Throw in the wandering buffalo, and it was a Laura Ingalls Wilder experience.
However, at the visitor center, they seemed unable to provide ANY info on activities visitors can engage in. For example, would have been great to get out of the car and explore on foot. There was no info in this, nor was there any on the historic Salt Lake’s beach area. It was frustrating trying to figure out the extent of our access to the water. If swimming is permissible, perhaps posting guidelines would be beneficial. What to wear, protecting your feet, and possible hazards would be most helpful, as many visitors are unfamiliar. Having more info on getting out and about once reaching the island would be invaluable. Then, we’d have an iconic Utahan landmark to talk about when everyone asks...
Read moreIt was very cool but it is hot. We were hope to ride some horses on the island as a family activity since we saw signs that says horseback riding on the island and someone told us you can do it. We got the ranch house and there is a big sign that says horseback riding and there are horses. But apparently you have to call head of time and make an appointment. So we did not go and the kido was a little sad. But overall it is a unique place to visit. I wanted to jump in the water and there is a beach access, but no joke the sand was so hot with sandals on that i walked about 5 feet and said there is not was i was going to walk to the water and back, about 150 yards one way. So we will have to go back in the morning or a different season. After a quick trip to the visitor center, I learn that The Salt Lake is the largest breeding area for the California Seagull. There is a colony of...
Read moreRugged beauty. I'm from S. Cali, and visited a sibling who lives in the area. We had no idea what Antelope Island was about but... totally worth visiting! The island/peninsula is definitely one of a kind. A variety birds, mammals, insects and more. We visited during record/historic lows for the lake. So it was intense to see how far the shoreline had receded. So much information all around and the rangers were super nice and very informative. This is definitely worth a visit, we spent about 5 hours driving around, getting out and exploring. But you could definitely stay longer. Some people RV and camp if that's your thing. Thought, to see wild buffalo roaming- and they really are wild- and so close, yet safely far away, was amazing!
Word of warning though, there are trails (bikes, hiking, horse trails too) to drive... be ready for an intense bumpy road, hope your vehicle...
