Do not waste your time or money..... We were disappointed in this museum, which we stopped at after visiting Appomatox Court House. It clearly has a Southern slant which we did NOT expect. Later we found out that it used to be called The Museum of the Confederacy. They should clearly change their name back to that! We thought the second gallery would present the other (northern) viewpoint, but it did not. When we got there, the checkout desk was swamped with a school group of kids buying candy, with seemingly one cashier. There were two other people at the desk, NO ONE spoke up and asked if there were people waiting to buy tickets. We approached one of them, after waiting some minutes in line, but she seemed put out by our request to buy admission tickets. Clearly, NOT worth the price of admission for a one-sided story! P.S. can't post pictures, because I did...

Highly recommended for field trips! I visited the museum today with three classes of 5th grade students. It was an excellent trip! The museum staff had an interesting and informative set of stations for the classes to take turns visiting including the log cabin in my pictures where we learned about home life during the civil war, a room with a mystery person activity where the kids found out information and made predictions about specific people from that time period using artifacts and census data, and the museum itself. The guides during our visit were extremely knowledgeable, easily kept the students' attention, and did a wonderful job answering unusual questions. I look forward to returning sometime with my family when we can stay longer since there are so many interesting...

We came from Colorado for the anniversary weekend. Front desk girl was extremely "unfriendly" and very "unhelpful". Brunette girl. I felt bad for buying my grandsons the "Jacob's Ladders" because she acted like I was making her day miserable. She didn't make eye contact at all and didn't engage at ALL in conversation i tired to get into. I was extremely polite. Get another job if you don't like dealing with the pubic. I tried to make your transaction pleasant, but you didn't seem to care AT ALL . Other Tham that, it was a nice place to visit. Bought food from the local school selling refreshments. Very nice students! Village "living history", Musket firings and cannon firings volunteers made our grandsons day. Thank you sooo...

This museum aims to present what Appomatox means to (a) "those who were actually involved in the surrender" and (b) "those whose lives the surrender affected”. The narrative for both was matter-of-factly, but the latter also hammered on what the South perceived as subjugation by the North after the war ended, a perspective that almost never enters the mainstream narrative. I thought that was effective for inviting pause and reflection but with scant and somewhat downplayed information about the freed slaves, I thought it lost some of its effectiveness. Still, I think it’s worth a visit for telling the other side of the story that most people rarely hear or read about.

This museum should have never changed its name from the Museum of the Confederacy as it is very slanted (and seemingly sympathetic) to the confederate cause. One of the "hardships" endured at the hands of the "cruel" Union troops was the "loss of farm laborers and household servants" as slaves were freed... Please- this is just a gross narrative to be promoting in 2023. I wish we had looked at Google reviews before stopping. The best part of the museum was the temporary exhibit done in conjunction with Virginia Tech - Enacting Freedom. (And that part was mentioned with derision and a sneer by the woman checking us in, as it might be 'jarring' to us)
