I accidentally took this trail after the one I'd chosen to do was still snowed in so not accessible. Id already read reviews on this trail and ruled it out due to being 50, unfit and a smoker. So I took this trail forgetting I'd ruled it out already. It really was an exciting walk and I saw a pika that squawked at me which I managed to capture on film. The waterfall was gorgeous on the way down, it was all going so well, I'd read on the sign it was an hour walk for the whole trail so was quite happy. Until I got nearly half way down, and it suddenly occurred to me I had to walk back up. So I got to the bottom, saw the epic views, then painstakingly crawled back up the incline. I genuinely thought I was going to die. It took me an hour to get back to the car. My knees were like jelly, my lungs were just not coping at all! I had to sit down every 10/15 feet. So if your like me, unfit and smoke. Don't even attempt it. 👍. It was gorgeous though 😊. And that little pika made it...
Read moreAbout 5 mins drive from well known Diablo Lake Vista Point. On State Rte 20 towards Winthrop town, in about 1,000 feet after mile post 134, you can find free parking spots on the left. There are limited spots, so people were parking on the shoulder alongside the road. There were signs about car break-ins, so better not to leave valuables in the car. Public pit bathroom (only one) at the entry, don't expect it to be perfectly clean, gets the job done. Going down to the dam was easy, took about 30 minutes with my 10 year old hiking with me. Getting back gets about 600 feet elevation. Having my kid with me, took us about 45 mins to come back to parking lot with couple of short breaks in between. You can walk on the Dam which was pretty cool, gets a lot windier on the Dam. Breathtaking views are worth the time and effort. There were no trash bins near the Dam, so be prepared to carry back what you are taking with you. Seen people with dogs, seems like easy for...
Read moreThe Ross Dam Trail is a very long trail of moderate difficulty, but it's not bad. You don't have to do the entire trail if also doing the Diablo Lake Vista Point and/or any other spots. You may just go up to and on the Ross Dam (or even better, a good viewpoint further up towards the trailhead) and get back up. The dam and the lake caused by it are a spectacular sight, and the lake actually is a little intimidating. Do note that the trail has good elevation within a short distance, and this can surely cause some pain while getting back up to the trailhead. There are restrooms and ample car parking available at the trailhead. Shoulder parking on the main road is okay as well. Not a bad place to visit when in the area to see the...
