This statue has been controversial since it was "gifted" by a Georgian/Russian artist in early 1990s. A statue that was rejected in at least 6 cities in the USA was shipped and put in storage in PR for around 25 years (with public and private funds) by annexionist politicians who were not in touch with reality. Most locals despise this gigantic statue because it now sits at the same location where their grassroots community center used to be (i.e., it was destroyed to place the statue there). The statue also has been repudiated for what it represents: the shameful conquest and brutal colonization of a world that was already inhabited. We spent some time driving around trying to find it, it was easier to see it from a distance on the road than it was once we finally got ''close'' to it, locked up inside some ''abandoned'' lot. Something like this should have been place in a more accessible location. Right across the street are a few of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico and a few famous sites , including La Cueva del Indio, Playa Casa del Juez and Playa Caracoles.
