This statue has been controversial since it was "gifted" by a Georgian/Russian artist in early 1990s. A statue that was rejected in at least 6 cities in the USA was shipped and put in storage in PR for around 25 years (with public and private funds) by annexionist politicians who were not in touch with reality. Most locals despise this gigantic statue because it now sits at the same location where their grassroots community center used to be (i.e., it was destroyed to place the statue there). The statue also has been repudiated for what it represents: the shameful conquest and brutal colonization of a world that was already inhabited. If you sense that people and/or businesses around the statue act like they don't care it's perhaps exactly that. Another reason to despise this statue is its lack of artistic, cultural, and...

Went out of my way to see the statue, but unfortunately someone decided to place it in the middle of nowhere, hidden( ROAD 681 AND 6681). We spent some time driving around trying to find it, it was easier to see it from a distance on the road than it was once we finally got ''close'' to it, locked up inside some ''abandoned'' lot. Something like this should have been place in a more accessible location. Right across the street are a few of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico and a few famous sites , including La Cueva del Indio, Playa Casa del Juez and Playa Caracoles. I still recommend going there because the ocean views...

🧐 I spoke to the locals about this statue and they also own the Cueva de Indios down the street (Boycott this Company). This is one of the worst examples of colonialism in the world. In Borinquen, we have a name for this: QUE CARIPELAO! This project according to the locals is being halted by the community for 10 years. We don't want it because it's a disrespect to us Taínos 😤 😪 😔. Government of Puerto Rico 🇵🇷, 💯 Send that statue and its owners back to Italy 🇮🇹 or Spain 🇪🇸 or wherever those people came from. OR TEAR IT DOWN. VIVA LOS BORICUAS~ By Cacique...

Such a shame that this is closed for the public. You can still see it from nearby roads but it would have been great to walk right up to it. In talking with locals there is rumors that locals want the statue removed because it’s offensive. What a waste of history. I would love for this to stay up and for it to be accesible. Every school kid learns about the history of how Christopher Columbus “discovered” Puerto Rico. I get it it wasn’t perfect but it’s history and history should not be erased just because you don’t like it. You study it and learn from it.

Sculpture by Admiral Cristobal Colon created by the Russian artist Zurab Tsereteli, in 1991, is totally bronze and measures 295 feet high. Located on a strip of land in La Boca in Barceloneta, Arecibo, its final installation took 18 years. The sculpture arrived in Puerto Rico in 1998 and was made as a present for the country that hosted it to commemorate Colon's first expedition to the Americas, which was 500 years old in 1992. You can't reach it so you have to observe it from the entrance.

We rented the house across the street from the statue to enjoy the Caracole beach. you can see it in the photo the little yellow house right on the beach. So we were able to see the statue and its magnitude for seven days. Definitely no parking and it is not open to the public. Don’t know why. It is a humongous statue. In the scheme of you loving statues yeah come see it. It doesn’t hold a candle to all the beautiful beaches we have here in Islote.
