Nicely Structured Gate! McClellan was an American soldier, civil engineer, railroad executive, and politician. A graduate of West Point, McClellan served with distinction during the Mexican–American War (1846–1848), and later left the Army to work in railroads until the outbreak of the American Civil War (1861-1865). Early in the war, McClellan was appointed to the rank of major general and played an important role in raising a well-trained and organized army, which would become the Army of the Potomac in the Eastern Theater; he served a brief period (November 1861 to March 1862) as general-in-chief of the United States Army / Union Army. Although McClellan was meticulous in his planning and preparations, these very characteristics hampered his ability to challenge aggressive opponents in a fast-moving battlefield environment.

The McClellan Gate, often referred to as the McClellan Arch, stands as a tribute to Major General George B. McClellan within Arlington National Cemetery, located in Arlington County, Virginia. Erected around 1871 along Arlington Ridge Road, which was then the cemetery's eastern edge, it functioned as the main entrance until approximately 1879 when the Sheridan Gate was built. The McClellan Gate ceased to be in use in 1966 when the road was closed, and further expansion of the cemetery to the east in 1971 left the gate positioned deep within Arlington. Notably, it remains the only gate from the 1800s that was built along the cemetery's eastern boundary and still exists today.

The McClellan Gate is a handsome monument to General George B. McClellan deep inside Arlington National Cemetery. It was built out of red Seneca Sandstone as a tribute to the General and originally served as an entrance to the Cemetery before the grounds...
