My friends and I were so excited for our recent escape room adventure at Ashburn Escape Room, but unfortunately, our experience left us feeling really let down. We've done several escape rooms before and always had a blast, so this was a bit of a shock.
Our main issue stemmed from multiple elements in the room not working as intended. At one point, we had the correct combination for a lock, but it wouldn't open. We spent over ten minutes repeatedly trying to enter it, convinced we must be doing something wrong. We asked for a hint, and even with the hint, it still didn't work. The game master didn't intervene or offer clarification until we asked for help again, at which point he confirmed our original answer was correct, but the lock wasn’t working. It really killed the mood of the game since we had so much momentum going.
Later, we encountered a similar problem with a telephone clue. We had the right code, but the message wouldn't play. We double-checked with the game master because I already doubted if anything in the room worked, and he confirmed our code was correct, yet the puzzle remained unsolvable due to the equipment malfunction. And finally, yet again, we had a key inside a lockbox. We knew the code, entered it, but the box wouldn't open.
While the game master helped when we shouted “help!” he also didn’t seem super interested in watching (which is fine I know places do it differently). In the past, when elements in escape rooms didn’t work, the game master would always jump in and help since they would be monitoring us. For us, we had to keep asking and doubted every item in the room which made it not very fun.
Edited to add it was the Sherlock room. First the desk with the red knobs, second the dial telephone, and third the lockbox with the last key to get out all did not work. I’m not looking cause trouble! Just thought I would share my honest feedback and hopefully sharing will help with fixing the room for...
Read moreA horrible experience. The girls did the elevator for a 12th bday party. The boys who worked there didn’t think to warn them of the sounds, lights, and vibration in the room, and one of the girls was horribly frightened at the end when they didn’t solve the mystery. Additionally, there were technical issues with the elevator panel, and the girls wasted a lot of time trying to figure it out when it wasn’t working to begin with. One of the boys there had to go in to fix the panel, and he promised them extra time to finish but didn’t deliver any. Finally, when the hour was up and the wicked laughter and lights started up and the girl started screaming, one of the boys came out to tell me that at the end when they don’t solve it, there’s cackling and lights blinking and so maybe I heard some screaming. I asked if they were ok because he didn’t seem very urgent or interested in what was happening. He said no I really needed to go in there and he walked away. I called after him to open the elevator doors for me but he didn’t hear or ignored me. I tried frantically to open the doors to get to the terrified girl and couldn’t do it. The boys who worked there were no help at all. Finally ones of the girls noticed the emergency button and she pushed it, unlocking the doors. Two of the girls had been to other escape rooms and they agreed this was a bad experience. They also noted that other escape rooms walk you through when you don’t solve it so you know what you missed or what went wrong but the boy here told us we were done and could go. It was a very bad experience. The only way we will do an escape room again is if we go ANYWHERE OTHER THAN ASHBURN, because the girls agreed the other rooms they went to were awesome. I’m checking w their parents to find out where they are, and we will go...
Read moreWe did the speech last year at thanksgiving and enjoyed it. We were in the area again this past weekend and decided to give it another go. We did the candy shop room. There were 8 of us (it really needs to be limited to 6). We were moving along very quickly but got stuck on one perticular puzzle. Finally we asked for a clue and the guy nudged is along but everything he was telling us to do, we already tried. He came into the room (my biggest pet peeve when in a escape room) to show us how to do it. And it didn’t work! “Technical difficulties”. He unplugged the prop, got what we needed and plugged it back in then left the room. We got to the last part and the prop again malfunctioned so they just put the code up on the screen to get out. We paid over $200 for 30 minutes in a room that didn’t work right. They shouldn’t allow people to use a broken room. Then, for some stupid reason, we decided to stay and do jailbreak. While jailbreak was better than candy shop there was one element on the wall we were trying to figure out when the guy came on and told us that it was broke and so they just put the item we needed in a lock box. Really?? We’ve done over 80 rooms and never have had this much difficulty. Not to mention, the technology is what wows people and is what we remember. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t fix what is broken before allowing other players in. I do not recommend this place. I only gave it 2 stars because we did enjoy the speech...
