Henderson County Performing Arts Center — Attraction in Athens

My wife and I were expecting "Daddy's Dyin': Who's Got the Will?" to be a somewhat schmaltzy comedy replete with colorful small town characters sporting decent values. Much to our surprise, we were advised by the play's director, just before opening curtain, that the production would be rife with "salty" language. We thought perhaps this meant a few four-letter words. Instead, the audience was bombarded with the following: Heavy doses of profanity and other disgustingly crude language Bigoted references to race and religious beliefs Glorification of marijuana use One scene involving physical groping of the female actor's breasts Extreme chauvinism by a male actor toward his wife's character.

If all of these titillating descriptors incite you to run right out and buy a ticket to this play, hooray for you. My wife and I were amazed at how the announcement of "salty" language turned out to be just the tip of the prurient iceberg description of this play. In the future, we plan to call the HCPAC office prior to every production and ask pointed questions about the language and subject matter in order to avoid attending another fiasco such as this one.

We will not be recommending this play to any of our friends or family. Quite possibly, HCPAC has underestimated their target audience as churchgoing, family-oriented folks in Athens, TX may not be willing to experience raunchy big city theater.

This place has my heart. There's just NOTHING I LOVE more than live Theater!! This place puts on the best possible shows!!
