I attended our annual fitness retreat at IslandWood and was so impressed. It is truly a special place. The facilities are very cool, with big exposed beams and gorgeous grounds. And the food - wow - it was super delicious but also very healthy. They always had gluten-free and dairy-free options available for those on special diets. My girlfriends and I commented that if someone were to cook like this for us all of the time, it would be easy to eat lots of vegetables and fruit and other healthy food. Staff was friendly and helpful. The Great Hall is cozy and welcoming, and one thing I really loved was the private dining room off the kitchen, where we were able to take a break from the activity and do some quiet arts and crafts. This room would be perfect for a corporate retreat, as it has a huge wood table with lots of chairs around it. Philip popped by the private dining room and asked me and two friends if we'd like to feed the koi fish. It was so fun. We got to feed the fish frozen peas. Philip was a gem and gave us a brief tour of the grounds and showed us some of the things he was working on. Overall, another GREAT experience...
Read moreMy school went hepre for an overnight field trip, it was the best experience of my life! Super pretty, teaches you a lot, cabins with friends, diverse animals, hiking trails, the beach on low tide. It was all great (especially the food). I recommend going here! Just be aware that there are snakes there, and at low tide, dont cross over to the right side of the bridge (quick sand). I went here in 5th grade and stayed at the Fishbowl Cabin (probably the best cabin based on reviews). rooms were spacious and clean. PS Miriam is so nice and fun! They have a beautiful garden and indigenous culture there. On one of the nights I remember playing capture the flag against the other school there and it was so amazing! The thing I didnt like was having to do the circle meetings around the fire before breakfats because I got...
Read moreI just took part in two fabulous winter naturalist classes at IslandWood on Bainbridge Island. The first was on identifying trees in the winter when you don't have the usual assortment of clues (but you still have quite a lot to work from, we learned!). The most recent was Winter Skills of a Naturalist. These were both geared to everyone whether you are an experienced naturalist or a rookie (I'm a bit above a rookie but far from a naturalist). The instructor Christina made it so fun and lively, and it was a wonderful way to spend a couple of outdoor hours -- especially now when things are just starting to put out their buds. I think the most important lesson in both classes was on honing one's observation skills. Being a plant "sleuth" is...
