The actual zip lining experience was a lot of fun. My friend and I did the 4 hour option, which consists of 6 “courses” that can take less time than 4 hours if you’re with a smaller and/or faster group. The group combos are random depending on who booked that particular time. We got lucky in that our group was pretty speedy—we covered the whole thing in 3 hours.
I deducted stars in my rating because of the subtle and implicit racism/bias that I experienced here (and have experienced throughout my brief time in the Poconos, unfortunately). I am traveling on vacation with a white female friend. Despite me being the more extroverted and outgoing of the two of us, the people we encounter here consistently engage, make eye contact with, and support her far more than they do me. Even though the reservation was under my name, the woman who checked us in consistently addressed questions to my friend. When we were getting buckled up into the harnesses, they did a cursory job with mine and spent way more time with the other (white) people in my group. At one point our guide, Francis, came around to do some further fixing of my friend’s harness before we started the course—mine looked the exact same as hers but he gave me a cursory look and said “you’re fine” before walking off. Both of us were stunned and I had to explicitly ask someone else (ironically the check in person) to help me. This was both embarrassing and frustrating. Francis seemed to be much less interested in engaging with and supporting me than he was with the other group members. He warmed up toward me over the course of the 3 hours out there by the harness situation really put a bad taste in both my and my friend’s mouth.
I live in a highly educated, diverse, and liberal coastal city so I sometimes forget that racism is still deeply alive and well, especially in these rural parts of the country. It is such a shame on so many levels. And because the types of things that happened today are subtle forms of implicit racism/bias, if I called anyone out on it, they would outright deny it. But it’s real, it’s pervasive, and it sucks.
I LOVE zip lining but I’m not sure that I will return here…or anywhere in this region for that matter. If you’re a person of color, you might be fine. Alternatively, you might have to self advocate in a way that you absolutely...
Read moreMy husband and I called to make a reservation for 2 for zip lining. Tara answered the phone and was super helpful telling us about the adventure course (2 & 4 hour options). It sounded like fun and a much better deal so we went for it.
We drove 2.5 hours into the Poconos to use this as an opportunity to adventure and do some leaf peeping in the fall. We were not disappointed. We stopped at the main building first. We're an interracial couple, and I am the POC who covers with hijab, we felt welcomed; the folks working were receptive and kind, and the staff is diverse. This set an awesome tone for the day.
Emily helped us at the adventure center from start to finish. She was is bright and absolutely wonderful - they are lucky to have her!! She is super thorough with safety checks and directions, easy to talk to, very sweet and didn't rush us even when I was freezing up in some moderately high spots (I don't get along with heights). We felt safe and had a great time! Thanks Emily!!
The adventure course itself is tucked away in nature, away from suburban and city hustle, the fall colors were still bright and colorful even though we caught them towards the end of the season. The ziplines were a lot of fun, each line felt earned after a course. The Big Zip (Pic attached) was the best highlight at the end of the 2 hour course, we would do this again solely to do this one again! Also, we saw a little black squirrel for the first time and it was AWESOME.
We are both active daily but found the course doable but challenging. I felt soreness in my arms like we had a great workout ... (and elder millennial back and knees for us both, but totally worth it!) Driving past the 2nd half of the 4 hour course, Idk if I can make it through a full 4 hours but it will be fun to...
Read moreIm going to try and be as fair as I can in this review. Therefore, there are two parts of the experience I would like to mention.
Firstly, the actual tree top course and paintball was AMAZING! I mean really good. Worth the hour drive, and great that they then have the restaurant nearby to eat dinner. Instructors on the course were fabulous and absolutely fun to be around! The course was reasonable, you felt like you had gotten your times worth (and your exercise in).
However, management misinformed me about payments several time via the phone. For example, our group was first 20 ppl (when the res was made) and then 14 when we got there. However, even after telling them this on the phone, they neglected to inform me before arriving that we would have to pay for 16 guests no matter what.
My frustration comes with the fact that they were unwilling to work with us, and indeed NEVER told us anything about this before arriving, even knowing this information well in advance.
For that reason Im giving 2 rather than 5 stars. My advice for larger groups, be very very clear with them when you call on what you're expecting and clarify price, as once you arrive, they will not work with you AT ALL on it. Indeed, like me you may still be misinformed. However, make sure to take down names of who you are...
