Unfortunately, this was somewhat of a disappointing campsite. We stayed 7-22-22 thru 7-24-22 and the lower lake water level was at a 5 year low for a dam inspection, which would have been nice to know when we made the reservations because the swimming area was closed and the fishing was not good. Overall the campsite's upkeep was severely lacking in regard to grass cutting and weed eating and there was no signage or directions once in the park and a lot of the sites were unmarked, but we just drove around until we saw the faded numbers on our spot. There were also no working bath houses during our stay and even though we didn't need them it would've been good information to have when booking the site. The campsite has potential to be really nice if the state would put in the effort, but I didn't see that during my stay. The upper lake seemed to be quite nice though as well...
Read moreOkay, in all fairness, we were at John W Kyle during a non-peak time. February. We arrived after dark and could never find our site. Very poorly marked spots. We finally got settled the next day. The park was in bad condition. Limbs and trees down everywhere. No bathrooms or showers were open except one which was very far away from our "prime" spot. The spot we chose was listed on their site as one of the best, 285, however they shoved 5 spots very close together to just to see a small bay. On top of that, one of the ranger's single wide trailer bouse was right next door with a yard full of material and equipment. It was an eyesore. There were also dogs barking non stop from somewhere. We were also there 3 days before we found someone to check us in. Maybe in the peak times the park is nice and well kept. They just were not ready for people yet. It has the potential to be a...
Read moreAfter having stayed at Wall-Doxey State Park, we anticipated a great stay at John W. Kyle. I even booked a premier site by the lake so we could enjoy the view. Although the view was quite nice, the site we booked online was not nice. We has site 287 which had a totally destroyed concrete picnic table, as well as, a useless charcoal grill (bent at a 30 degree angle), a grill table bent just as much, and no fire ring. Since there are no rangers here, you had to call in for service. The gentleman I spoke to was very nice and allowed us to move over one site. Still, this area of the park show neglect. The grass in this area hasn't been mowed in weeks (more likely months). If you stay in the lower numbered sites around the main gate, they seemed nice, but these premier sites leave a lot to be desired. I doubt that we...
