If you like history and old forts, this is right up your alley. The interpretive center is only open Thursday through Sunday 1-4 pm but the fort remains are open every day. Informative displays throughout the preserve explain its conception, construction, defenses, armament, and eventual demise. Though fenced in, it has a great view of Port Royal Sound. As others have noted, there's considerable graffiti in the rooms where they stored their arsenals, but it doesn't detract from the overall experience. Just be careful with children, you can roam around on top of the ramparts and there are no barriers or railing. There is a chance for falls over 8 feet onto concrete. Lastly, there are clean bathrooms and a water fountain available 7 days a week at the interpretive center building.

This wonderful piece of South Carolina history is beautifully preserved. This fort is an iconic landmark for the Spanish American War. The visitor center has some models of how the original fort was armed, as well as some models of the original surounding buildings. The movie about the fort explains the importance and the history of Fort Fremont. One very unique aspect of this fort is the beach access. The beach at Fort Fremont is beautiful. There are some fantastic pieces of driftwood. I highly recommend visiting this historic point of interest. Admission is free. There are picnic tables, and there are restrooms in the visitor center.

This is a very small public beach area just down the road from Ft Fremont on the map as “Lands End.” Nice little spot where my grandsons enjoyed exploring. If you’re looking for seashells you won’t find any here, unfortunately. Some of the locals are very nice, some are territorial. I appreciate the kind ones so very much! This little spot is posted as a public beach access so we stopped & spent about 20 minutes here. A small climb over a rock wall gets you to the sand.

ReConstruction is expected to last from May 2019 until 2022 (unknown extensions now due to COVID-19). We experienced the park before closures and it made for a fun place to explore with the kiddos and run with your dog. There’s also some pretty beach access, though the higher tide covers most of the sandy potion of the beach and goes up to the trees. It’s actually a fun place to take photos, though the insides of the Fort were especially run down... hence the reconstruction. There’s plenty of local lore and ghost stories if you visit your local library (the closest is the Saint Helena branch you’d have passed along the way to reach this Fort). Would definitely recommend checking the place out once it reopens. We’re excited to see what changes...
