If you like history and old forts, this is right up your alley. The interpretive center is only open Thursday through Sunday 1-4 pm but the fort remains are open every day. Informative displays throughout the preserve explain its conception, construction, defenses, armament, and eventual demise. Though fenced in, it has a great view of Port Royal Sound. As others have noted, there's considerable graffiti in the rooms where they stored their arsenals, but it doesn't detract from the overall experience. Just be careful with children, you can roam around on top of the ramparts and there are no barriers or railing. There is a chance for falls over 8 feet onto concrete. We experienced the park before closures and it made for a fun place to explore with the kiddos and run with your dog. There’s also some pretty beach access, though the higher tide covers most of the sandy potion of the beach and goes up to the trees. It’s actually a fun place to take photos, though the insides of the Fort were especially run down... hence the reconstruction. There’s plenty of local lore and ghost stories if you visit your local library (the closest is the Saint Helena branch you’d have passed along the way to reach this Fort). Would definitely recommend checking the place out once it reopens. We’re excited to see what changes...

The visitor center has some models of how the original fort was armed, as well as some models of the original surounding buildings. The movie about the fort explains the importance and the history of Fort Fremont.
One very unique aspect of this fort is the beach access. The beach at Fort Fremont is beautiful. There are some fantastic pieces of driftwood.
