If you happen to find yourself in Duluth for a day and are willing to make a short trip north to the Black Beach, I would recommend with earnest that you seize the opportunity. The Black Beach is a uniquely space as it sits open to the seemingly endless waters of Lake Superior. Being such an open space, it is wonderfully quiet for the large number of people that tend to spread out across the back sand. Undoubtedly, the serene volume is do to the lack of physically objects for sound to refract; though at times one might hear the seemingly distant lilt of children playing.
If you are brave enough, you might take a quick dip in the water. Though, Lake Superior is known for its chilling temperature; don't say I didn't aim to warn you. Scattered across the beach are small fire rings and picnic style benches. You may consider making a day trip and planning to have a fire cooked meal during your stay! All in all, it is a wonderful place to visit for any age...
Read moreAre you sometimes overwhelmed by crowds of strangers making questionable choices while feeling slightly trapped as the dark rock bits encircle your feet with every step? Then I would recommend avoiding this beach during peopling hours/months if you’d like to avoid a panic attack. It begins as overwhelming the second you arrive…loud overfilled parking and a table tent selling souvenir shirts. On the beach it’s not much better, folks letting their dog poop and walking away, drones circling, small tripods set up recording “candid” videos people get grumpy if you accidentally walk through, several unsupervised children scaling large boulders. If you make the same mistake I did, minimally wear some loops or better yet noise cancelling headphones with your choice of zen music playing. You’ll need it. Two stars are only because it’s kind of pretty and the pictures are good if you can google erase all the other people in...
Read moreIt was really cool! The beach isn't really black. It's more of a dark brown or dark reddish brown, and it really hurts to walk on if you're barefoot. I was kind of disappointed that it didn't look like the pictures. The sand is made of bigger gravel pieces, so I'd recommend water shoes or just keeping your shoes on. Also, the beach isn't that big. It looks nothing like the pictures. Parking can also be difficult if the parking lot is full. You have to walk from the parking lot all the way down to the beach. For anyone not sure how to get to the beach: park in the lot, walk out of the lot entrance and keep going down the road. There will be another entrance about a block away, and that's the entrance to the beach. Handicap parking is at the second entrance, that's why there's another lot....
