First of all there are two main entrances Kenoyer street is the lower entrance and electric st entrance is the upper entrance (across from Lafeens Family Pride Donuts). A third entrance/parking lot was just added off woburn st and fits about 10 cars. The Woburn mini parking lot has no playground and is mainly a trail access point. Right at the upper and lower parking lots there are kids playgrounds. Close to the parking at the lower and upper lot is the main waterfall that brings a lot of people to come and take selfies on the bridge often completely unaware of passing cyclists using the bridge. Use your bell there and ride slow. Closest to the upper parking lot off Electric Ave, is a bike pumptrack that has three different skill levels. It has been so muddy the last couple weeks I believe it has been roped off. The three levels of skill are Strider level AKA balance bike for little kids, intermediate where you can get going pretty fast and still be staying on the ground. Then the expert-level track has some jumps on it but I actually saw a kid on a Strider balance-bike on the expert level track riding like an expert. This park can be entered from St Clair Street, Electric Avenue, bloedel Donovan Park (Scudder Pond Trail) or from Yew Street or iowa street. They just added a small parking lot at Woburn Street near the turn for Fraser Street before you get to Iowa Street. Depending on your interests you can go cliff jumping yearround! I just saw people in wetsuits doing this last month. I've been told from people from the East Coast that if this park was in Illinois it would be considered a national park. But here in bellingham this is just another Park. This park is extremely big and is a great place to bring up bike there are extra wide flat gravel trails and you can cut through the park to get towards Bellingham downtown central business district just follow the trails West. Highlights include waterfall with historic Bridge, three pump tracks in Progressive skill levels, swimming areas galore (anywhere you want along the creek) and cliff jumping area, tennis courts at upper lot and multiple day use shelter areas. You can officially rent the shelter areas and have them reserved or just come by to get some water or use a picnic table in the winter, its not really reserved hardly at all. note: if you're interested in both the bike park and checking out the main waterfall or the Derby Pond don't worry the upper and lower parking lots are super close together and you don't need to go very far from one parking lot to the other. On that note the Woburn trail access mini parking lot, is super far from the upper and lower main lots. This park is so big that there are a lot of access trails like off Rodedendron drive in the Alabama neighborhood that you can access the park from by foot or bike. Enjoy and see you...
Read moreYesterday, I visited Whatcom Falls Park with my two sons. The measure of any place they go is how many things there are to climb and subsequently fall off of, so this park was top notch! We fell off the playground up by the tennis court, the hills of dirt at the bike track, and even the side of the pathways. A few places we did not fall off of were the bridge in front of the waterfall, or the path that leads to what appears to be a wicked tube-ride, cruelly interrupted by joyless metal gates. Both of my children seemed to be disappointed that we couldn't fall off of these as a family, but I did my best to explain the laws around physics and personal injury liability. The criss-crossing network of pathways through the wooded park beyond the bridge is brilliant, and now that my four-year-old has learned that hiding and not answering when I call out his name is a perfect way to watch me dance around like a marionette, he enjoyed himself thoroughly. After my two-year-old did his best to ignore my directions not to climb on the low wall of the bridge, he sullenly stormed off, incidentally kicking over what must have been at least a $5000 camera on a tripod. Luckily, the old gent who caught the camera had a good sense of humour, and also the good sense to decline my offer of taking one of my kids to raise for me. I would go back here - it's peaceful, and lovely, even on a cloudy day, as it was with us. 4...
Read moreA place of peace, fun , and to have a great adventure. Also good place to walk, hike, jog. Sight see. Hang out with friends. Swim when its warm but i recommend not jumping off of the little cifs becausebthe water below is to shallow and anyone who dose jump into the water is seiriously endangering themselves and others. Its different then it use to be. I jumped back on my day and i even hit my feet very hard against the bottom. It has become shallower sense. You dont need to jump off the cliff in order to have fun swimming. Just hike down to the bottom, and then jump in if possible and or necessary. But no matter what your activity at Bellinghams Watcom falls, please dont litter, be respectful of nature and the habitat that wich many types of animals and insects call home. Also be aware pf your suroundings and know what your foing before doing it when hiking and climbing. It is also a personal recommendation of mine to not go to the falls alone unless you know the path and or where your going. But once we can understand the importance of safety and how it must always become first, then the next most important thing to remember is to appropriately enjoy yourself, relax, and have fun and dont forget to breath some fresh air while ur there.... the trees will thank...
