M3 Ranch — Attraction in Bellville

This review reflects only my personal experience and opinions regarding M3 Winery.

Last November, we toured M3 as a potential wedding venue. It was the first venue I visited, and we were greeted by CR, who made a great first impression. He gave us a tour of the property and introduced us to his animals. One of the main reasons we booked was that a donkey wearing little burro bags would walk around serving drinks to guests. That feature was included in our signed contract and sealed the deal.

We were also told a groom’s suite would be ready by our wedding date. Excited, we booked quickly after learning another couple was interested in the same date.

From that point until August, communication was limited and mostly related to payments. When making our second payment through Venmo, a transaction fee was added that wasn’t mentioned in our contract. I questioned it but paid. For our final payment, I sent it without the extra fee, and two weeks later, I was asked again for payment even though it had already been made.

The final invoice also included a cleanup fee that was already listed in our contract. I brought it up, and CR corrected it, explaining that the contract had been updated since ours.

The agreement itself should have been more detailed, down to the smallest detail, so we wouldn’t have had to ask about so many basic things. We had to provide our own ice, and when I asked if there was a freezer to keep it cold, the response was simply, “Coolers work great.” With about 90 guests and hot weather, keeping ice cold all day was a challenge. I even had to provide the bartenders with supplies, as the only thing they came with were shakers. For the price we paid, I would have assumed they would have come more prepared. By that point, no question felt too silly to ask, as we even had to confirm whether toilet paper would be provided. Some parts were outlined regarding what was included and what wasn’t, but there were still many small things you wouldn’t normally think to clarify that should have been clearly listed either way.

About a month before the wedding, CR requested that all communication go through my coordinator. Around the same time, I was told the donkey would no longer be available. I was told another donkey in training might be used, but ultimately none was provided, and nothing was offered in its place even though it was in our signed contract.

On the wedding day, the groom’s suite was a room attached to CR’s home, with minimal privacy. A sheet separated it from a personal, loud gathering that later turned into a pool party during our reception. In my opinion, having a separate party going on at the same time as my wedding was not appropriate or respectful to our event. People were walking around in minimal swimwear, making several guests uncomfortable. We also had wedding crashers who were staying nearby. They were told they could visit the winery but were unaware a wedding was taking place.

After the event, our deposit was withheld due to alleged video evidence of a groomsman smoking an alleged illegal substance. Some of the groomsmen may have vaped outside, but none had what was allegedly an illegal substance. We requested to view the video so we could identify who was involved and have them repay the deposit, but we never received a response. It felt like the deposit was withheld based on an assumption rather than confirmation of said person at our wedding. We would of been able to confirm and address the situation with the alleged person.

In hindsight, I wish I had chosen a different venue. My experience with M3 Winery was stressful, and things discussed and in the contract were not fulfilled. While other couples may have had positive experiences, I personally would...
