Found out about the caves at lunch, I purchased a parking pass from 2pm to 4 pm. We arrived at 2:35, and the entrance was blocked off. We pulled into the exit side of the parking lot. I was chased down by a ranger who explained that the parking lot closes at 2:30. He told me to come back the next day. When talking to him he explained that since we came in through the exit he wasn’t motivated to help us out. And once again told us we had to leave. I showed him that the pass was good from 2:pm to 4:Pm. But since we were 5 minutes past time to check in. (Zero information about the lot closing at 2:30 on the web site, only said to be in the park by 4) We drove an hour and a half out of our way with our RV to get to the park. We were greeted by a very unprofessional and rude ranger, and not allowed to see the caves we paid tickets for, after all they close at 4, and we were there at 2:35, with a almost full parking lot, but there was a space for us. I don’t see why we couldn’t visit other then a power tripping guy. I give the park 0...

It's a cool, free adventure underground that is open all year and is easy to get to. It is pitch black, so bring adequate lighting tools. If you plan to make it all the way, you will be either hunched over, crawling, and even some climbing at certain points. The floor is mostly sand, so crawling isn't usually painful. Just watch your head! Unfortunately, parts of the cave have been vandalized with spray paint and bottles. But most of the cave is intact.

If coming from Bend, there is a small sign on your left just before the road turns to gravel. When you take the turn, the road turns to rough rock and dirt. Some may want to park and walk. But once you're there, it's just a set of stairs that take you down a dark hole in the ground.

Bats do reside here, though we only came across one. If you plan on visiting other caves, be sure to change footwear between them to prevent the...

Tried to see the Lava River Caves but the reservations were full. But I’m kind of glad because these caves were awesome plus no crowds. There were only 2 other cars at the trail head. The cave opening is very close to the trailhead too, like 30 feet away. As soon as you start to climb the stairs you feel a rush of cold air, which was nice in the 80 plus degree heat. The caves are large but there are some sections where you need to crouch but then they open up again to large caves. There is one section that you have to crawl on your hands and knees, which can be a little intimidating if you are claustrophobic at all but it opens up again to a large cave. We explored quite a bit and it felt like we went back about a mile or more and it kept going but I felt like that was enough as I did have the thought of being trapped under ground in the back of my mind the...

Stopped here while driving from Bend, Oregon to California. The cave is amazing but be sure to bring a flash light and sensible shoes! The stairs are a bit narrow to walk down but are fairly easy thanks to the handrails. Once in the cave there is a good distance that can be easily walked by those that are a bit unsteady on their feet. If you are feeling adventurous you can explore further into the cave (lava tube); as you go further in the cave ins become more prevalent and the walking becomes more climbing. The road to Boyd Cave is a bit rough but can be done in a 2 wheel drive vehicle (at least when its not raining/snowing). If you have 4WD you can take some side trails along the way to add to your adventure.
