I've been here a handful of times over the years, it is a beautiful ride. I have yet to be able to go into the monument and get a view from the top - everyone else I have gone woth has been more afraid to go than I have been. If one is into history, please come check out this wonderful monument, there is history all over Vermont, and I am so glad I was born in this Beautiful Green Mountain State; the history of the whole place is amazing, really. There is a lot of stuff to see in the gift shop, if You want to spend money, there's stuff to buy. Plan to pay to take the elevator ride, but as I said, I don't have anyone willing to enjoy the view with me, and I don't plan to go up alone if I have people with me, at some point I will get up to the top, bye and by. It isn't unreasonable for the ride, but I don't recall the price at this moment. The monument can be seen at different spots throughout Bennington, when one gets to the monument, the true height is quite breathtaking, probably why everyone I have brought has said "No", when I asked if we were going up. I say to go, even if You don't go to the top, the history of the battle, and the erection of the monument, and seeing it in person, is all well worth the trip. I'll update with pictures the next time I go, my phone memory is full, or there would be tons of pictures...
Read moreThe Bennington Battle Monument is one of the best historic sites to see in the state of Vermont. The monument stands at over 306 feet tall and is the tallest building in the state of Vermont. There is an elevator that goes to the top where you can see the surrounding Vermont countryside and parts of NY and Massachusetts. The viewing deck at the top is well labeled with signs telling you what you are looking at. You can see Mount Greylock in Massachusetts, the Bennington Battlefield in NY, and the Green Mountains in Vermont. The monument is very popular in the fall, where you are able to see miles and miles of beautiful foliage. Be sure to take a walk around the base of the monument. The Seth Warner and John Stark statues can be seen here. There are also monuments dedicated to the American soldiers who fought in the Battle of Bennington. The grounds are very well kept. The staff was friendly and helpful. The gift shop is well stocked with much Vermont themed merchandise. Get your tickets to the top in the gift shop. Be sure to see this nice...
Read moreWe have driven by a few times and finally decided to check it out and happy we did except the elevator isn’t working. We didn’t read up on the site and didn’t even know that was an option to take an elevator up for what we envision as the fantastic views. It’s free to park here and walk the grounds but in the gift shop you can buy $2 per person ticket to take a ride up. There is a gift shop and separate building for bathrooms and tourist guide pamphlets. Although the elevator was down, we were told only the 2nd time in 14 years there is a staff person at the entrance to give you the history of the monument. We spent about 45 minutes and we were told our tickets are good for a trip up the elevator once it’s fixed. They couldn’t say when it would be but to keep an eye on their website. Hope it’s back up and running for leaf peeping season but still a beautiful area to explore. Glad we...
