One of the most educational and visual visitor centers I ever visited. The center has bathrooms, museum, theater, and a gift shop. The exhibits & their information are fascinating. Assateague Island is famous for its wildlife preserve, beautiful seashore, nature, and wild horses. We collected a lot of information about where to go and what to see on the island. Children can embark on a scavenger hunt on the island and receive a wood badge after completion. A movie named Misty was filmed there and on my to see movie list. We spent two days exploring the island and the hiking trails. Tourist season is in mid April till the end of September and can be busy. If you prefer less crowds, off season is better yet some of the places around the island are closed.
We had a lot of questions and the rangers in the visitor center answered all of them. We got maps of the trails on the island and learned about the park’s rare bird, the plover. We bought a book to identify each of the horses on the island with the names of each horse and colored photos of all the horses. We were able to identify all the horses we photographed there. We were instructed to stay a bus length away from the horse and not to feed them. The movie about the wild horses in the visitor center was cute and funny especially how they shot vaccine & birth control injections into the horses with a gun from a distance.
The wild horses are everywhere and great to photograph. I loved how pristine the beaches were. To camp on the island is $40 a night. Vehicle permits are required to drive on the beach of the island. Admission to the park on the island will require that you pay $25 for your vehicle. Active duty military get free passes...
Read moreNice little VC just outside the island. Good information inside and helpful staff working on our Wednesday visit. We made it just before closing and got the junior Ranger books. The books were pretty good. Simple enough for our little ones to complete on their own mostly. When we visited the island itself it was wonderful. We got to see sikas and the wild horses. As well as ospreys, heron and of course gulls. I will say, on our visit to the Park itself I was very disappointed to be passed by racing Rangers. We passed the park gate at exactly 5pm and they were all piling out the door at the strike of 5pm. So eager to leave their jobs they barely waited until close. We were already driving out and maintained 28mph. My Chevy doesn't run cruise at less than 25. We were only a couple miles up the road when 2 vehicles in my rear view closed quickly. The 25 mph limit is because of the potential for wildlife to come into the road. Which a Ranger is well aware of. The 2 women each driving Honda CRV's, white and grey, came up behind me and did the same 28 mph for about 1/4 mile before whipping out and passing me. By the time I got to the stop sign another mile up the road, they were long gone. I can only estimate they were doing 40-50 mph. My kids and I were all very disappointed to see park Rangers speeding through the sensitive...
Read moreGreat place to visit and bring the family. We originally went here hoping to see the famous wild horses that live on the island. We did get to see several that were along the sides of the roads that lead to the park entrances/parking lots. A park employee told us the chances of seeing the horses are better if you park in the National Seashore section (as opposed to the state park section of the park), so that's where we went. You pay a $20 fee to enter the lots for the "National Seaside" part of the park and can reuse the parking pass for 7 days. Unfortunately, once we actually entered the park we didn't see any horses, at all. We weren't disappointed though, bc there's still lots of things to do. There are some moderate trails you can hike on, you have access to the beaches and can swim, sunbathe, and even surf fish. If you do want to surf fish, you do need a MD fishing license, w/a stamp for bay/coastal fishing. All in all a great place, but if you're going, make sure you can go for more than one day if you want to get your money's worth and up your chances of seeing the horses. Oh...and everyone we talked to said do not try to approach the horses, as they are wild and have a tendency to charge at people when they get too close. The park recommends at...
