To fellow tourists, in order to not get too disappointed when you get here only to find it closed, my advice is not to hope for anything. If you get to see it, lucky you; if not, think of it as having arbitrary hours and go see the National Seashore’s visitor center.
The house closed today during normal hours for “inclement weather”. In addition the general history of the house, docents gave thorough and interesting talks on colonial child-rearing, cooking, agriculture, and other topics. I've taken many tours of colonial properties, but I learned the most from this tour.
Rackliffe is a little out of the way and doesn't seem to get that many visitors (part of the reason the docents could give me so much attention). You can drive directly to the house or take a short hike from the Assateague Visitors Center. The hike is mostly flat, shaded, and not too buggy, a good break from hikes...
Read moreThe Rackliffe House trail is awesome short trail about a 1.5 miles. I usually take my blood hound for a walk on this trail It’s wide and flat. It’s very well built Trail. The best part is it’s free of charge. You park in front of the visitor center and walk right around the back to the beginning of the trail it will then bring you out to the front of the parking lot. It’s a great walk to see some history of the Rackliffe house. Pet friendly with some nice views of the bay and Verrazano bridge to assateague island. Best time to hike it is usually fall winter spring months. You will it come across some wildlife such as...
