This is one of the largest picnic areas you will find within the Sand Bernadino National Forest near Big Bear Lake. Take Route 38 to North Shore Lane and follow the signs to the area. Like many picnic sites around the lake, they are open daily from 0800 to 1800 hours and this is a fee-based location so make sure when you park your vehicle that you display a valid recreation pass. The picnic area offers a wide variety of options, and there are plenty of grills and tables with adjacent parking spaces and several different walking trails that connect to the Pacific Crest Trail. You might also want to check the informative display board for additional background on this area. The only major complaint we have about the area is the lack of restroom facilities. Currently, the former restrooms are completely sealed off and we were only able to find two porta-potties in the area, which as we all know are not the best and these two fit the bill. Still, what we like about this location is the size and being away from the sounds of Route 38, and you just gotta love the smell of all those pines trees.

I liked this area. It's a nice place to walk or have a picnic. Unfortunately do to the government shut down, the parking lot was closed. They have picnic tables and trash cans. It's away from the city and a little secluded area and quiet. We spent about 2 hours and built a snowman.

Beautiful surroundings and plenty of nature to enjoy. Walking trails and bike paths as well as picnic tables and lakeside views. You can get the adventure pass you need to park here at the discovery center just down the road. Highly recommended!!

Campground was full, so I slept in my car along the side of the road, near the picnic area. No complains at all. I woke up to a beautiful view of the sun rising over the lake, and was 5 minutes away from the other side of the lake.

Honestly, sleeping in my car probably beat any campground for that night. I was able to secure a Yellow Post Site the other day, but that night was memorable and very enjoyable to me.

Not a lot of thorough traffic on N Shore Lane, and not one car woke me up. I heard a fair few coyotes in the distance..or were...

Great place in (nature.) Adventure pass needed to park inside on regular days and don’t forget to get your fishing license if you’re going to do fishing . Barbecue grills on site. And bathrooms near by . Rangers are also nearby which makes it feel more safe . Always make sure you clean up after yourselves and keep this special piece of nature clean for the next people to enjoy . Great views of the lake and mountains...
