Access to the Slant Indian Village site is located behind the main visitor center at Fort Lincoln. Visiting the site and reading about the Native American history is fascinating. Although the site is small compared to the Knife River Village further north, a stop here is worth your time as the displays are different. The visitor center has a large exhibit covering the Village, the forts, and the history of the area. The Village is accessible at all hours, but the recreated lodge homes are only open during business hours.

Definitely worth the visit. Plenty of educational boards in the area explaining the native american way of life. You can get a tour guide but there's enough literature to explore this place on your own. Some of the earthlodges were sealed when we went, but most were still open. Its a short stones throw from the visitor center. There is a wheelchair friendly bridge to cross.

Mandan Village Historic Site – you come here, and voilà: some holes in the ground. That’s pretty much it. But hey, if you close your eyes and breathe in that damp, earthy scent, it kind of hits like a peaty Scotch. History with a nose and a finish! Just bring some imagination – and maybe a dram to go with it.
