Went December 2, 2023 for the Christmas Celebration and it was very disappointing. Nothing was really decorated. No open fires to get warm by and no Christmas treats to enjoy. Went to the tavern first and the women in there were talking about their modern lives and ignoring people who were walking in. So much could have been done for this celebration. Homemade wreaths to be sold, hot cider and special Christmas treats. Even homemade bread could have been baked and sold. Each building displayed homemade food but nothing was explained or offered. People were dressed up in character but not acting in character. Only a handful were true to their role. There was a modern day food truck at the beginning of the town…really that stuck out like a sore thumb. Maybe a different type of food should have been provided. The characters could have walked around singing Christmas carols. Old time games for the children. The General Store could have been greeting people and handing out candies. So much could have been done. The coordinator needs help planning this event.

We did do a carriage ride and it was nice. Looking at the old buildings made the walk pleasant but otherwise very...

What a great field trip destination, especially for kids that don't typically have a reason to venture out of their urban setting! Our class really enjoyed seeing the blacksmith in action and loved getting to touch a couple of "real live" farm animals. Make sure to check the forecast and dress accordingly (as some of our 2nd graders discovered the hard way). It's all outside, so consider bringing a jacket, sunscreen, bug spray, and a water bottle. Also, DEFINITELY wear some comfy walking shoes because there's lots of that. The only criticism I have is that some of the presentations were given very sloooooowly so the kids struggled a little bit with staying attentive and fidget free. Had the information had been more "rapid fire", I feel that there would have been more engagement and therefore, fewer instances of redirection. (Seriously, there was one presentation, that even as an adult, bored me to tears. 😴) Over all though, we had a really great time and I'd highly recommend...

Saw a segment on this place in the morning news weeks back. Never knew much what it was all about, so did some research. Come to find out, they are the reason all the hiking trails were shut down. Never could figure out why all of a sudden all those conservation sign were put up everywhere. It not Conservation Land, it Jackson County. Hiked those trails for years, what’s up that there need for protection there with all the fake conservation area signs? Then it clicked with the news segment. That is where Missouri Town 1855 is. Just how much land is allotted to them? Because it not very big on the map, yet several hundred acres of dense woodland park land with miles of hiking trails, that don’t even come near their park are all shut down because of of this organization. Signs look cheap, basic and homemade and look fake and unofficial. Wouldn’t be surprised if Missouri Town put them up themselves. Why be so...

I like this place for several reasons. It is quiet and off the beaten path. Most of the time there is hardly anyone there, so if you like photography there is rarely anyone around to muck up your shots. It’s all pretty carefully done, and is quite interesting.... but. If you go with kids, and there is no one in blacksmith or working it MAY be somewhat boring. Many of the buildings are blocked so you just see the insides from the doorway. There isn’t a lot of protection from the elements, so going when it’s beastly hot or raining would probably not be ideal. However if you are going for authenticity, then go for it. Bring your own snacks, and try to head out when they have actual events. I would love the place to be more lively. Early fall seems to be a popular time.

Visited on a semi-rainy day so that did dampen( excuse the pun lol) the exploration a bit and the picture taking. Otherwise definitely an experience to gain historical knowledge. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and walked observers through the various buildings, how they were transported to the venue ( some were, not all) and had insights into way of life and the animals also! They were warm and friendly:) Definitely a day out with the family, the kids will have a blast. Cost to enter was $8 pp. Nice, cheap fun day out! There are sodas and water for sale in the ticketing office that cost a dollar each.

If you want to get the most out of this, I would recommend calling in advance to find out how many interpreters are on site that day. They will be your source of information. For the historic buildings, some you can go in, some you can see into, some you can't do either. There was one mule and two calves/oxen in training, lots of sheep and chickens when we were there. They have pigs and other animals in the summer. It's an outdoor walking loop so go in good weather. Plenty of benches to rest.
