Wild Turkey Distillery is a standout gem along the Bourbon Trail, renowned not only for its exceptional bourbons but also for the rich history and engaging experiences it offers. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the distillery and meet the legendary Jimmy Russell, who has been the Master Distiller for over 70 years. His presence added a special touch to the experience, and getting my bottle signed by him was a highlight that I will cherish.
Upon arrival at the distillery, the warm and welcoming atmosphere was immediately apparent. The staff members were friendly and eager to share their knowledge about the bourbon-making process. The tour of the distillery was both informative and entertaining, providing insights into the craftsmanship that goes into producing Wild Turkeyâs beloved spirits.
Jimmy Russellâs passion for bourbon is infectious. During the tasting session, Bo guided us through a selection of their offerings, each with its own unique characteristics. Hereâs a closer look at some of the standout bourbons we tasted:
Wild Turkey 101: This bourbon is a fan favorite and is known for its bold flavor profile. With a higher proof, it delivers notes of caramel, vanilla, and a hint of spice. The finish is long and warming, making it a perfect choice for those who appreciate a robust bourbon.
Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit: A single-barrel bourbon, Kentucky Spirit is a more refined offering. It features a rich mouthfeel with flavors of dried fruit, honey, and toasted oak. The complexity of this bourbon showcases the meticulous selection of barrels, making it a must-try for enthusiasts.
Wild Turkey Rare Breed: This barrel-proof bourbon is a real treat. It is uncut and unfiltered, allowing the full intensity of the flavors to shine through. Expect a powerful combination of sweet and spicy notes, with hints of dark chocolate and rich caramel. The higher proof brings a unique depth that bourbon lovers will appreciate.
Wild Turkey 101 Rye: For those who enjoy a spicier kick, the 101 Rye does not disappoint. With its higher rye content, it offers a peppery finish complemented by notes of mint and brown sugar. Itâs an excellent option for cocktails or sipping neat.
Throughout the tasting, Bo shared anecdotes and stories from his decades of experience in the industry, highlighting the evolution of bourbon and the traditions that make Wild Turkey special. His down-to-earth demeanor and humor made the experience even more enjoyable, creating a relaxed atmosphere where everyone felt comfortable asking questions and engaging in discussions.
In conclusion, my visit to Wild Turkey Distillery was one of the best experiences on the Bourbon Trail. Between the exceptional bourbons, the informative tour, and the opportunity to meet a true legend like Jimmy Russell, it was an unforgettable day. Whether you're a bourbon novice or a seasoned connoisseur, Wild Turkey offers something for everyone. I highly recommend stopping by for a tastingâit's an experience you won't...

If you're traveling the Bourbon Trail, Wild Turkey Distillery near Lawrenceburg is a stop you shouldnât miss. With a stunning location high above the Kentucky River and a deep connection to bourbon tradition, it offers a blend of history, scale, and soul.
The tour begins at the Visitor Center, where a shuttle takes you through the story of one of bourbonâs most iconic families: Jimmy Russell, with over 60 years of experience, is the longest-serving active Master Distiller in the worldâand still working alongside his son Eddie Russell. Together, they represent over a century of bourbon mastery.
Once at the distillery, the tour walks you past the massive grain silos and into the heart of production. Youâll see where the mash is cooked, where Wild Turkeyâs proprietary yeast is cultivated, and where fermentation happens in huge 30,000-gallon tanks. A definite highlight is the towering four-story column still, a marvel of modern bourbon engineering.
Later, you visit one of the oldest rickhouses on the grounds. The scent as you enterâoak, caramel, vanillaâis unforgettable. The sight of hundreds of barrels aging in silence brings a real sense of reverence to the craft.
Back at the Visitor Center, the tasting brings it all together. We sampled a variety of expressions, including classics like Wild Turkey 101, the smooth Longbranch (co-created by Matthew McConaughey), and the rich, complex Russellâs Reserve lineup.
đŻ While the tour was informative, it felt slightly less immersive than othersâmost production areas are only visible through windows, and our guide was a bit hard to understand at times. Still, the depth of history, the quality of the bourbon, and the sheer legacy of the Russells more than make up for it.
â Final thought: If you love bourbon with bold flavor and a family legacy behind every bottle, Wild Turkey is...

We've done a lot of distillery tours and if you've taken one tour and paid attention you know 90% (51% corn for all you bourbon aficionados who have heard it 1000x) of what you will learn on any distillery tour so we chose the Immersion tour and it was the best tour we have been on to date. It was basically a history tour of Jimmy and Eddie Russell. Exceptional guide, Bo, made us feel as if he was a part of the Russell family and he shared so much passion and history about Jimmy and Eddie that you felt as if they were with you on the tour. Worth every penny and every mile we drove. Thank you Bo for showing us the pride you have of being part of the Wild Turkey and Russell family. You made our experience "over the top". Original Post: Did not have a tour scheduled but will definitely be going back with one scheduled. Beautiful area, very nice gift shop and tasting area. Tastings are a little on the high side. I wanted to sample 3 bourbons and they were $10/shot which is not bad but I was trying to chose the right one to purchase and 3 full shots at 10am would have been way too much for me (we had 4 more distillery stops scheduled) was way too much. Wish they would have had flights available vs buying full shots. Staff was helpful (when you asked) but could have been a bit more intuitive to helping the customers. There were a lot of visitors and the staff was all behind the counter talking amongst themselves. Had they been talking to the customers they actually would have had a...
