Washington Monument State Park Review

Washington Monument State Park in Maryland is a fantastic destination for hikers, history lovers, and nature enthusiasts. Located on South Mountain, this park offers stunning panoramic views, beautiful seasonal foliage, and a relatively short but rewarding hike to the historic stone monument dedicated to George Washington.

Spectacular Views & Heights The hike to the monument, while not overly strenuous, does include some elevation gain. At the summit, visitors are treated to breathtaking views stretching across the rolling hills of western Maryland. On clear days, you can see well into the surrounding valleys, making it a prime spot for photographers and sightseers.

Seasonal Foliage: Spring, Summer & Fall Spring brings a burst of vibrant wildflowers and fresh greenery, making the landscape come alive with color. Summer offers dense, lush tree cover, providing ample shade along the trails while still allowing for clear views from the monument. Fall is the real showstopper, with the surrounding forests transforming into a brilliant mix of red, orange, and yellow. This makes autumn one of the best times to visit. Wildlife & Copperhead Snake Warning Nature lovers will appreciate the diverse wildlife in the park, but hikers should be cautious during warmer months. Copperhead snakes, which are venomous, are known to sunbathe on rocks and along trails, especially in the late spring and summer. Staying on marked paths, watching your step in rocky areas, and avoiding tall grass can help minimize encounters.

Final Thoughts Washington Monument State Park is a perfect blend of history, natural beauty, and adventure. Whether you're visiting for the incredible views, the changing foliage, or a bit of history, it’s well worth the trip. Just wear sturdy shoes, bring a camera, and stay alert during...

Washington Monument State Park is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Maryland. As a history enthusiast, visiting this park was a memorable experience. The iconic Washington Monument, which predates the more famous one in D.C., stands proudly atop South Mountain, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

The park's well-maintained hiking trails provide excellent opportunities for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. I highly recommend taking the short but scenic hike to the monument's summit. The effort is rewarded with stunning vistas that are especially captivating during the fall when the foliage is ablaze with color.

Beyond its natural beauty, the park's historical significance is profound. The monument itself, built in the early 19th century, serves as a reminder of our nation's past. The visitor center offers informative exhibits about its construction and the role it played in local history.

What sets this park apart is its peaceful ambiance. It's an ideal place for a picnic, contemplation, or simply escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether you're a history buff or someone looking for a serene outdoor experience, Washington Monument State Park is a must-visit destination. It's a testament to the enduring legacy of George Washington and a tranquil retreat for...

About the only downside is the $2 entrance fee! Everything is there including beautiful park for the children to play on with lots of cut grass, Immaculate and breathtaking views of the Cumberland Valley and mountains Beyond including sideling Hill the Potomac River Valley Pennsylvania, Shenandoah mountains in Virginia as well as West Virginia. Monument was originally built in 1827 and has been restored to perfection. The Appalachian Trail even has chipstone on it and is nice and wide and easy to walk. What else do you want restrooms and running water? You got it. The state of maryland, Department of Natural resources, did a fabulous job and our state government needs to be congratulated. Don't believe me? Try to find some place like this in another state like Pennsylvania. You simply won't find it. And did I mention pay parking lots and paved roads? And when you walk to the top of the monument, not only is there a breathtaking View for at least 30 or 40 miles, but also many large soaring Birds such as Hawks, turkey vultures and bald eagles. Hats off to the state of Maryland and the Department of...

A spectacular park with incredible views from the monument. You can get on top of the monument and see Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia & West Virginia. It’s a short 10 minute hike from the parking lot but if you want a longer hike you can hike here from Greenbriar state park & that will be a 6 mile hike. Otherwise you can start here and just take the Appalachian trail for as long as you want. There is a small museum with an extremely knowledgeable gentleman who will tell you about the history of our first president and beyond. There are sites to camp, have picnics and even playgrounds. It’s got something for everyone. Don’t miss the first monument built in honor of President George Washington!
