Hemenway Park, Boulder City – Rating: 4.5/5 Visited: July 2024 – On the way from Hoover Dam to Las Vegas
Located in Boulder City, Hemenway Park was a refreshing and memorable stop during our journey from Hoover Dam to Las Vegas. Despite the intense July heat, the park offered a light breeze and scenic beauty that made it a pleasant place to relax. What made it truly special was the sight of wild bighorn sheep, Nevada’s state animal, peacefully grazing on the grassy lawns. Seeing them so close, in a calm and natural setting, was an unexpected highlight.
The park is well-maintained and family-friendly, featuring a children’s playground, basketball court, picnic tables, and clean restrooms. It’s set on a hillside, offering great views of Lake Mead and the surrounding desert mountains, making it ideal for a short rest, photo stop, or even a picnic.
The flow of our visit felt natural and relaxing—we parked easily, enjoyed the views, spotted the sheep, and had a short walk around the grounds. Everything about the park is simple yet charming, offering a quiet break from the highway and the bustle of Las Vegas.
If you're traveling this route, I highly recommend stopping at Hemenway Park for 20–30 minutes. Just bring water, wear a hat or sunscreen, and keep a respectful distance from the animals. It’s a peaceful, scenic, and rewarding spot that adds a unique touch to any...

Hemenway Amenities: There's one shaded picnic/dining area but plenty of grass fields. The playground and swings for the kids will keep them busy for awhile. There's a fenced basketball area with 6 hoops that offers one regulation full court or two smaller full length courts. There's a horseshoe pit and there's a great view of Lake Mead on a clear day. There's some dirt mountains on the lake side where you can hike up quickly to get a better view of the lake.
Hemenway Desert Big Horn Sheep: It's awesome how the Big Horn Sheep just kind of roam around peacefully in a group. They are completely oblivious to the Human audience watching them chill out peacefully. The sheep are very social with humans and they were comfortable with only being a few feet away. Still take precautions as they are still wild animals.
Overall it's a small park but you're here to hang out with the Desert Big Horn sheep. It's definitely worth one visit to check out but I'm pretty sure I'll be back one...
Read moreThere may not be a guarantee that the Bighorn Sheep will be down when you visit, but the park is still a peaceful and serene oasis right outside the insanity that comes with Vegas. I was told that the sheep come down around 2pm and between 4pm & 5pm. I was there a little after 4pm today and the small herd was "mowing" the lawn of the park on this partly cloudy day. The playground surface was just replaced with the bouncier, softer, safer material. There are covered gazebos with picnic tables and memorial benches under shady trees. There is a public restroom off to the side of the main entrance. There is ample parking unless the park is overran with people.
There are some desert hiking trails beyond the well taken care of green grass that makes up the majority of the park. People were respectful and friendly as we all were taking photos of the sheep.
Again, there is NO guarantee that the sheep will be there when you visit, however the views of Lake Mead are a welcomed backdrop to this very well-maintained family...
