Forest Preserves of Cook County — Attraction in Bremen Township

Wonderful place to have my first camping experience since I was little. The staff was friendly and funny, making me feel like family, rather than just another customer. The grounds were well kept, and the bathroom was way cleaner than I expected of any "camping" bathroom. There was a fun and informational night hike when we went that both I and my boyfriend enjoyed just as much as our 6yr old. The grounds are close enough to modern comforts to not be terrifying for a first timer in case you forget something and also far enough away from busyness to be a great decompression getaway. Only complaints are that the day we arrived, the water in the bathrooms was out for a good portion of the day, bathrooms and showers could not be used. Also the wood for the campfires was possibly too recently cut, or was left out in some rain, because it would not stay lit, and smoked a lot, like it was wet. You can see regular attention is given to the trails with signs warning about poison ivy and areas treated for poison ivy , etc. At first the lack of garbage isn't noted , but I couldn't even find empty plastic bottles from thoughtless hikers ( who should be apprehended and given electroshock ). I saw these preserves 15 years ago and was wary because nobody would dare go into forest with overflowing garbage and debris everywhere. Congratulations! Are deserved. There is an RV park , a kayak or boat rental . Wow! The trails could be marked better but that is getting picky. You will be pleasantly surprised. Went here to take a class on basic camping 101. Excellent class with excellent instructors. I believe their names were Chris, jaylynn, and Rick. Hope I got it right. They seem to know their craft and enjoy it. They went through steps of putting up & taking down a tent, packing it properly, sleeping bags setup, preparing a camp fire, to preparing for hiking.
