A very cool stop along the parkway with a hike down to the river and falls The Blue Ridge Parkway is a 470-mile-long roadway that meanders through the mountains and connects the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. The parkway boasts about 170 official stops along the path. This site is one of these many stops. The parking lot is not just a pull-off, there are parking spaces, a set of restrooms, and a trail from this stop. There is a large informational display that shows the various sites that can be accessed from this location. There is a set of stairs that leads down to a winding and fairly steep asphalt trail. This trail ends up at the river and a “bridge” that looks questionable but will allow you access to the other side of the river. Hiking up (to the west) will bring you to a set of falls (lower and then upper falls). The trail by the river is not very well marked and is often across rocks in and along the river. Overall, it is a good place to stop, see the river, do some hikes, or just...
Read moreAbsolutely loved it! The ride up there was amazing, I highly recommend going to the pull offs and listening to all the bumble bees buzz. It is so relaxing, truly the best sounds I have ever heard. The thing I liked most about the hike was you were never alone, the other visitors were very friendly and most would help you get to the next waterfall, many give encouraging remarks as you passed them: "you've got this," "almost there, don't give up!" The views were amazing. There were many places you could get off the trail and find other things, like the sand and rocks. It was like you stepped onto the beach. You can also find nice rocks or flat places to stop and eat. The blueberries are definitely a treat with the walk. I highly recommend going here, it is not that bad of a hike just a lot of walking and mud so wear good shoes and bring tons of water. It is also kind of cool but once you start moving you get use to it. I absolutely loved it, I would...
Read moreGreat hike for families and I've seen lots of 4 legged family members as well :), easy packed dirt and boardwalk trail until you get close to the Upper Falls, then it gets a little steep and you climb some rock 'steps' but worth it! Once you leave the parking lot, you head downhill for a short period, at the bottom you cross a stream which is a nice area to sit and enjoy the water for a little bit. At this point you can go to the upper falls, less than 2 miles away, or take a shorter trip to the lower falls. This area is well marked. Both areas are pretty, fuller falls when rain has fallen recently. The trail to the upper falls gets a little tricky towards the end, just listen and you will hear the falls off to the left of the trail. But getting there you will see the path split several time without any directional signs. Usually this is just another way around a muddy area or stream. Stay on the path that...
