If it hadn't been for customer service, I'd have given sliding rock a 5 star review. Let's face it - it's FUN! However the girl taking money ($2/person) needs to have someone discuss with her the importance of honoring our military members! We didn't have cash on us, so a member of our party went back to the car to get cash. While we were waiting, a young serviceman came up and was told that it was $2 to "get in". He looked through his wallet but he had no cash. He told her that was okay but was there a bathroom he could use - she said there was a bathroom but you had to pay to get in and turned him away. I was EXTREMELY appalled by this behavior. Mind you this took place on the 4th of July!! Perhaps she was unaware that he was a service member (even though it was very obvious to me and everyone around me that he was). He was polite, he gave her no attitude and just walked away. But I am completely disgusted that an employee of ANY place - especially a national park - would not even allow a member of the military to use the restroom without paying.... it's a shame. With all that said - the activity of sliding rock is fun and definitely worth visiting and hopefully there will be a bit more training in proper customer service to those who risk their lives to ensure we can leisurely enjoy activities like...
Read moreWe visit this area often and the sliding rock has been on our list of places to go for a long time. So glad we did! It was good, cheap fun. I think it only cost us $3 per person to get in. There had been plenty of rainfall so the water was flowing good. You may want to check before you go. We know someone else who went a different time and there was not as much water and they didn't have the same experience we did. I wore a swimsuit with shorts bottoms and swim shoes (a definite must). We took towels, car keys, phones and an underwater camera because you can film as you go down. It was my husband, daughter and I, so we took turns staying with our stuff. They do not offer lockers. You must climb steps to get down to the area and climb over rocks to get to the sliding area. Once you get to the sliding rock, there is a rail to hold on to as you climb the incline. Sliding was so fun! I think we went 10 times. I thought sliding on a rock would hurt but the water propels you so fast, you glide across the rock. You land in a pool at the bottom. The pool has large boulders in it that you need to navigate to get out. The lifeguards offer a hand up to get out. Take it, it's very helpful. It was a crowded summer day but the line moved quickly. I would definitely...
Read moreSliding Rock is super fun, and inexpensive if you're on a budget. My friends and I go at least once per summer, twice if we can coordinate it. A pass for the day only costs $1 per person, and entry is free after 5 pm when the life guards leave. There are plenty of places for spectators to stand and watch. The actual sliding area has handrails and lifeguards during hours of operations, so it's perfectly safe if you obey the rules. After hours, the life guards leave so people can still slide at their own risk (and have a little more fun in the process). Typically there is a wait to slide between the peak hours of noon to 5:30 pm or so, but it usually isn't terribly long. The water is frigid, but Sliding Rock is a great place to hang out on a hot summer day.
While you're in Pisgah, be sure to visit Looking Glass falls and Graveyard Fields (both are...
