I stopped by Cape Sebastian for the great views at one of the highest points on the Oregon Coast at about 700 feet. You can see Humbug Mountain and Gold Beach to the North and Crescent City to the South. A steep three mile trail takes you down to Hunters Cove with a series of switchbacks as you descend down to a step drop with a rope to the beach. You can hike the first part of the trail if you are short on time and want to see the great views of the rugged coastline. Located at mile marker 334.8 on Hwy 101, about seven miles south of Gold Beach on a steep and winding road. A nice place to watch whales at certain times of the year, explore a secluded beach down a steep cliff, and watch the sunset over the horizon with amazing views.

A nice hike with great views. It’s 2.5 miles round trip to the beach, downhill the first half and all uphill on your return. I don’t think going to the beach was worth the hike, stopping at the viewpoints was the real highlight. But if you want the beach, it’s wide open and quiet. The last part of the hike is very steep and does require using the ropes anchored to the rocks. I would not bring kids on this hike because I would not want to manage them on that last stretch.

Highly recommend this hike if you have the time and energy! Other reviewers have referred to this as about 1.8 miles each way, but we have a day hiking book that labels this 5 miles out and back with 920 feet elevation change. It's a good workout, for sure, but with breathtaking views and beautiful scenery the entire way with a lovely fine grain sand beach at the end if you're willing to use the rope rail down the last really steep part. This is one of those hikes that it easier up than down; we were there while it was dry, I think going down parts of this trail during wet conditions would be...

Beautiful trail, takes about an hour to hike down and an hour back up. If you want to end up at the beach you have to climb down a short length of rope at the end. Fairly steep and moderate difficulty trail. If you're brave enough, you can take a mountain bike down the trail (I did but beware of sharp turns, rootwads, steep sections, and uneven ground!) if you're prepared to crash a few times. Mostly forest hiking, a few nice ocean views. Bring a flashlight if you plan on being there anywhere close to dark; you...
