I grew up in Metamora (well, just outside of town, but our post office box was there, and my stepfather worked as a blacksmith, so we were in town alot), and it made me sad to see so many of the buildings for sale. It is still the beautiful old historical place I remember, minus the awesome candy shop. This time we passed thru without the kids, but we'll be bringing them back soon! The grits from the mill are always tasty and healthy! If you are in town, be sure to stop in at a store right across from the park on the main road - some older ladies have a shop totally brimming with every neat thing you could want to find from antiques, to old board games and books, old but nice cookware, cast iron! The card doesn't have an address but it's labeled "Auntiques and Uncle Junque" which is cute! I'll always love Metamora - all the historic-ness of Nashville In without the overpriced and over crowded. It needs some business to keep it alive, and...

I went to Canal days 2024 and was very disappointed. There were more food vendors than anything unique to buy. There were very few art and craft vendors. Everything was made in China. Almost all of it was flea market vendors. I buy my Xmas gifts there cause they are unique and one of a kind. Not anymore. The stores were closed or open with junk from China. The whole town is run down and some buildings are torn down and gone. I remember the days of taking 2 trips back to the car and so excited of the neat finds. I don’t recommend unless you are looking for made in China...

It was a fun time seeing what we had time for. We took the train from Connersville to Metamora. The trip was great each way. The station was warm and comfortable, moreso because it was cold and rainy outside. The staff was friendly and the guys collecting tickets were talkative with everyone and had a sense of humor. Only thing that could have made it better would have been more time. We only had a couple of hours and I know could have sent twice that amount of time and still not visited every shop. Looks like there will be a next...

Some places were not open in Metamora, which was a bummer, but they are family owned and deserve vacations too. Train ride from Connersville was awesome but would not want to go when very hot and sunny out as the cars are like being a bit in a tin can and not all windows reliably open...or stay open...it is quite a jarring ride. Train cars not built for comfort they were built to get commuters from and to work only.

The site itself quite interesting, and the Midwest nice staff gave me a preview as I was short on time. Did a walking tour of the town, fairly rundown and shabby with room to improve. The adjacent shopping area in historic buildings had waaaay 2 many for sale signs, which I've never seen in a historic site and I go to alot. Place overall needs a go getter economic development director.

A fascinating, out-of-the-way little corner of Indiana. A canal built in the 1800s is still in relatively good condition here, and a tourist train runs along part of the track. Also of interest is an aqueduct that carries the canal across a creek. From afar the aqueduct looks like a covered bridge, and the signs claim it is the only covered, wooden aqueduct in the USA.
