This is an excellent hike. The Victory Steps are at (in what is now, in January 2020) the dead end of Verrado Way. Follow the road up past Main Street, and go straight at the roundabout to reach it. Look up "Victory Steps on Google Maps to mark it. There is a good bit of parking in the dirt along the street.
The steps only go about halfway up the hill, but would present a challenging hike for many people. The steps are made of railroad ties and quite broad--great for big feet and small feet, too. This portion of the hike would be fine for many kids. The view from the top of the steps is great, even on a 'brown cloud' air pollution day such as in my pictures.
Now, after the steps there is a hiking trail that goes all the way to the top. This is definitely more challenging in terms of incline and footing. You have to be very cautious in a few spots; this is not a good hike for people who have fears of heights. Small children may have a hard time, too; I saw a little kid flop into the ground pretty hard and scrape his knees up because he was going too fast down a slope.
The view from the very top is fantastic. On our way down, we ended up finding a fork in the trail that brought us down a hiking path to the street, avoiding the steps. Counting several stops to take pictures and enjoy the view, it was about 30 minutes to the very top and back down. Do note that I did this midday in January. This would be a MUCH more strenuous hike during the summer months. There is virtually no shade on the hike, no places to sit other than rocks, and this is definitely a place where you'd find scorpions and...
Read moreI have just started hiking these steps this year but the steps are not as bad as they look. After you keep up with it a few times going up and down is a lot easier. The step can be busy but there are lots of cut outs in the mountain to step aside. The steps are wood steps that were put into the side of the mountain. So they are not all even. Going down is easier however there is a lot of natural dirt on the steps that can make it slippery- wear good shoes or hiking boots.
This place a lot has 3 different trails that you can take around and through the mountain. I have not been on these trails. There are a lot of warning saying that this is a difficult trail. With the natural paths I’ve seen- it’s very possible. Again. Wear good shoes and bring lots of water. There is hardly any natural shade on these trails
UPDATE I have been coming here consistently now for a few months. Water is a must as summer comes along. There is no natural shade along the steps. And can be difficult without being prepared. Go at your own pace these steps follow the natural grade of the mountain. Going up the steps takes anywhere between 10 minutes and 30 minutes depending on your level...
Read moreIf you’re looking for an amazing work out where you can leave dealing accomplished while also getting your real like stair master on this spot is it. Located at the end of Verrado you’ll run into a small parking lot where you walk a little to the steps. There are over 300 steps that are made from old railroad ties. It’s very cool. This place definitely has all types of fitness levels so please be kind and patient for those who are trying their best to get into shape. I have to admit it took me three attempts to make it to the top at the beginning of my journey. If you’re afraid of heights keep in mind it’s fairly steep, there are no handrails either. Keep an eye out for rattlers depending on time of year they have been known to get close to the steps at times. If you make it to the top the views are pretty great and you can even opt to hike down the backside of the steps instead of down the stairs. There are other trails nearby if you wanted to keep going. It is free to come here. Please make sure you take out what you bring in so it doesn’t get shut down. There are many homes nearby. You will definitely be sore later if you don’t do this activity often. Good luck...
