The Bear League has great goals and efforts, but.... Early this afternoon I squeezed in time amid work to call the Bear League about an injured bird I saw in the parking lot at King's Beach off Raccoon Road late yesterday afternoon. It was the fifth call I made trying to find help. I wouldn't have considered calling the Bear League, but one of the other animal organizations I called suggested it as a possibility. The first four animal organizations in Tahoe/Truckee were very kind and brainstormed other contacts when they couldn't lend direct help. The fifth call, to the Bear League, was completely different. I have made hundreds of such calls at this point in my life, but I have never experienced someone as rude as the woman who answered the phone for the Bear League. She chastised me the whole time, for example, sarcastically saying they would have no volunteers if they sent them out for things like this. Apparently (to my surprise), they would help wild birds, but only if brought to them. As the woman's rudeness escalated during her unsolicited monolog, she said, "This is the most insane call I have ever had," at which point I ended the call. I usually think of people involved in animal welfare as caring about all living things and appreciating others who do. It is not out of the question that a group might have a connection in the area who could make a brief stop to look for the bird in that confined area. Although I didn't locate help in the five calls, the first four were answered by respectful staff who attempted to facilitate redirection. Conversely, the Bear League person was so egregiously impolite that I'm shocked she is permitted to work there and, especially, to answer the phone. Unfortunately, I now have a bad impression of that...
Read moreShocked at how Ann spoke to me when I called with questions about a bear who visits our neighborhood every morning. I had my 2 year old in the car and was struggling to get into my house this morning. I needed advice of who to call and who can keep an eye on this particular bear. This bear in particular is extremely aggressive while protecting itself. It has charged my husband and neighbors. Ann told me I should reconsider living in bear country (I’m a real local and not a transplant). She was yelling over me, arguing with me about having this bear around the kids going to school in the morning. She told me I don’t belong living here and that I’m “not getting what I want” which was insane and confusing because she wouldn’t allow me to even begin to ask my initial question of is there someone who keeps an eye on certain bears. I was hoping to report an issue with this bear. I think she assumed I wanted someone to come out and kill this bear? Which is absolutely shocking and heinous. I feel like I’m in the twilight zone right now. She had the most foul mouth. I couldn’t believe this is the kind of human we have to give us advice and information. She only wanted to tell me that I have no right to be calling her and no right to have concerns. She was absolutely disgusting and offensive to speak to. Bear league, do better. Ann doesn’t belong answering one...
