Most people heading up the 62 are heading to Joshua Tree so they blow right past Covington or Big Morongo Canyon. They shouldn't. It's a glorious walkable haven with some accessible trails for those sporting wheels rather than walking shoes. It closes at sunset courtesy of the local host, but he/she is a font of great eco-lore... Don't bring your dog, since it's a protected area. If you stop, you will not be disappointed by the myriad trails through oasis-like areas. Bird and wildlife lovers should not miss Big Morongo Canyon. It's a perennial family...
Read moreThis is my backyard growing up. Love this place just becareful of the mountain lions and seldom black bears. As you hike make plenty of noise and talk loudly to your group and they will stay away for the most part. If alone its wise to care a few rocks so you dont have to search for them when confronted. Dont throw them at the animal just off to the side and it startles them enough to flee....careful not to hit other hikers and inform them of animals if you can.....dont liter please other then that have fun and bring plenty of water...
