Our group was in town for a long weekend of wine tasting in Plymouth. We visited 9 wineries and every winery visit was great, except for Iron Hub.
It was recommended by two people separately and so we expected a great wine tasting experience. Unfortunately it was just ok. I think it's just the stark contrast to the superb, friendly, and warm service that we were getting at the other wineries that is the problem here.
The service from our hostess Ruth Ella was friendly but I think she wasn't very accommodating. Might be the winery's policy. We asked about other wines and were told that we can only try what's on our menu. At other places, they usually would let us try before buying and we usually buy a case of wine in the end to be shipped home. We did buy a bottle of their aglianico blend to try and purchased two of that to take home.
We did meet the winemaker Spencer and his cute dogs. Spencer was really nice and chatted with our group for a bit. It's a beautiful winery with a sweeping vista but unfortunately we just felt like service wasn't all...
Read moreUnderwhelming wines, beautiful scenery. This newcomer on the Amador wine scene has attitude as if they are a Sonoma winery, without the quality or taste of its peers. We enjoyed the view from the vineyard and purchased a bottle, but were diassapointed to see we were still charged our tasting fees.
My advice: Go to other Amador wineries instead - the norm in this region is that if you buy a bottle (even just one), the winery waives your tasting fees and also provides palate cleanser snacks. This norm, sadly, does not apply to Iron Hub. Ironically, the caliber of wine at Iron Hub is not as great as it’s neighbors.
If I come back to Iron Hub, I’ll skip the tasting and buy a low-end bottle and bring a picnic to enjoy the view. Helwig Winery has awesome views as well, and great sprking wine, and allows you to bring...
Read moreBeth, Tom, and son Spencer Jones are a true winery family, that produce some excellent wines from this Estate and the surrounding Shenandoah Valley. The coolest part of this winery is their knoll top location and new tasting building and deck. It is a very special place to enjoy a lunch, mountain breezes and a delicious picnic. Melinda is a wonderful hostess as is Beth and Family.
Favorite varietals here are Grenache, Petite Sirah, Syrah and the excellent Sauvignon Blanc. The Resolute (blend) is both different and a must-try, most wineries do not have an Aglianico blend.
Come out here and enjoy some true local agriculture. This is family winery at...
