Trail is closed. The couple in blue (not me) decided to venture past the Do Not Enter sign. Restroom (open, deep porta potty toilet, no sink, but toilet paper and a trash can) is open. There is some regrowth of grass and other shrubs again after the fires last year and rain last week. Large parking lot, about 20+ people wanted to hike too, while I was there (1.19.19) to check it out. Unfortunately the trail is closed.

This was a fun hike i wish i would have brought more water i would have done a longer hike. You definitely need to pay attention where you walk its a very small path with ups and downs. I loved that there were plenty of trees for shade, not to mention i forgot my sunscreen. I would definitely do this hike again. Oh and i went alone, i dont thunk this is a good hike for groups nor children.

The path to the peak is closed because it we'd or after the fire. It's difficult and signed as do not enter. The lower path was great and such a beautiful peaceful hike into the canyon. Crazy to see how much it changed since the fire.

Excellent trail for running and hiking. Plentiful, free parking. Poor reviews are based on inexperienced hikers expecting a waterfall in the summer or fall in southern CA. The big waterfall is off to the right (north) of the marked trail around 1.5 miles into the hike. It's easy to spot if it's running. There is also a small waterfall about 1/3 of a mile from the parking lot. Abundant wildflowers in the spring, especially after wet winters. You can also cross over the Kanan Dume Rd. tunnel west of the parking lot and travel the Backbone Trail east. This section of the trail is much less crowded. Awesome both ways. Can't go wrong here. Highly...

The trailhead is right off of Kanan Road. It is an easy two and a half mile hike to the dirt motor way. The hike gently rolls up-and-down, crossing streams with beautiful panoramic views of the Santa Monica Mountains. The vegetation has been coming back strong since the fires, there are flowers on the hike that have not been seen for many years. It is easy to observe the Humboldt Lily, and the Mariposa Lily as well as a myriad of other breathtaking flowers. Allow 3 hours for the 5 Mile out and back hike. Bring sufficient water as this is a totally exposed hike with no shade or...

Newton Canyon Trailhead / Kanan Road Trailhead Part of Backbone Trail

Dogs: On-Leash Only Difficulty Level: Moderate Parking: Free, limited space Mountain Bikes: Yes

This is a great hike! Parking is free with the option to donate to State Parks. It's an easy 5 mile round trip or go further on the Backbone Trail. Constant climb & descent throughout the trail. It can get hot in the middle of the day during summer, so I would recommend getting there before 8am. And it's a great...
