The visitor center is the place to get information about the park. Also, you can get souvenirs, books, and gifts.
One important point about the visitor center is that it was constructed by CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps), and it is a tribute to them, too.
Since Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest Canyon in the United States, it is considered the “Grand Canyon of Texas”. It has geological variation and rich colors. A piece of land 120 miles long and 800 feet deep. Although Palo Duro formation is a relatively young topographical feature (in geologic time, at least) formed less than a million years ago by erosion.
The canyon has served as a traditional refuge for Native Americans and, in 1874, was the site of the final and decisive battleground of the Red River War.
In 1933, after the state of Texas purchased land in the upper canyon to establish Palo Duro Canyon State Scenic Park. The initial improvements, including the construction of a road to the floor of the canyon, were made by the CCC under the direction of the National...
Read moreNeeds an upgrade. Pretty small, and it was very packed even on a very cold and somewhat rainy day. Huge line for the bathroom. The center itself has incredible views, which is why I definitely give three stars. The exhibits were very relevant, and did not take much time which is a plus that they don't completely inundate you with a ton of information. It's very interesting that the only place to get beverages is by the glamping campsite. There is no food in the visitor center, only a gift shop. Restrooms seemes to be an afterthought. For a state park welcome and visitors to center, pretty small and very basic. -- updated 4/6/25 -- came back for more hiking. Opinion of the place has not changed, even though the weather was much more enjoyable this...
Read moreMixed feelings here, half the park was closed so I can’t give a full review. Price seemed ridiculous, normally $30. That’s what you pay for the Grand Canyon or Rocky Mountain National Park and this is no where near that epic of a place. Signage or explanation on interpretive documents were almost nonexistent. They need big help in the PR department. Coming into the park you get no info on food, shopping, or the live theater. You can drive around and be clueless to what is available. The only thing that is impressive in this park are the natural vistas. Bring your wide angle lenses as the views are worth recording. …Park Service you need to hire some good photographers and copy writers and give your visitors a clue to what you...
