New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment for good reason: 2 national parks, a slew of national monuments, cultural treasures, mountains, desert, charming towns and fantastic regional food. Most importantly, New Mexico is the birthplace of Smokey Bear, and you don’t want to miss the Smokey Bear Historical Park in the town of Capitan. This part of the country is beautiful and unique ...the plants in the garden were labeled, identified and well maintained. The history of Smokey the Bear was educational and the gravesite was a nice tribute to a bear that I revere. Smokey the Bear made America become aware of forest fires, preservering our beautiful national forests that Teddy Roosevelt preserved for all of us to enjoy. I think it's appropo that Theodore Roosevelt, the President, who did the greatest act for this country by recognizing the importance of this country's beautiful rich landscape and taking action to preserve it for all Americans, past, present and future. Teddy and another bear named Smokey helped protect those same forests. This was an honor to tour a great memorial of our history.

Great historical park and museum all about Smokey Bear. A bit off the beaten path, but if you're passing by Capitan, it's worth the time to stop and visit Smokey's hometown and grave site. It was a rainy day when we visited but there's a nice little garden/park area where Smokey is buried and it has a variety of trees, plants, and cacti that are native to the region. The museum gives a great walk through the history of Smokey and the folks who made him popular worldwide. Also, an educational section on forestry, forest fires, and such. Only $2 pp for admission includes a self-guided tour and short film. It would be a great place to take the kids on an educational field trip. Was an awesome little place filled with history of this amazing bear and forest fires. The Forest Service Rangers were awesome enough to allow us to stay a little after closing in order to explore more of the importance of fire safety, how firefighters battle the blazes, and how Smokey with his message has evolved over the years. Afterwards we were able to view his gravesite and take a moment to remember those who had fallen in the line of duty from New Mexico. Afterwards the gift shop also was full of memorabilia and items surrounding Smokey and the fire safety message. The lady working there was super friendly and helpful. We'll definitely return whenever in the area, and we think you should make an effort to check out this wonderful place.

We stopped in Capitan, NM on our way through to visit the park. We got there about 15 minutes before closing and went into the gift shop and bought a couple of souvenirs. We didn't realize that the park was about to close until the cashiers told us. Props to them for speedily checking us out and pointing us to the park entrance. We were able to make it in before closing, use the restrooms, and briefly peruse the center before we went out into the park. We were able to take our time in the park, as it had a one-way turn style exit, and we did not have to re-enter the park center. The park was well maintained and easily accessible. We were able to take photos and visit Smokey's final resting place.

What a wonderful tribute to the awesome folks who keep us safe from forest fires! Focusing on the little bear who was saved during the big Capitan fire, this "Smokey the Bear" museum is a tribute to those brave folks. Plus, it has a very nice museum, gift shop, and garden walk. The folks in this town are really friendly, even in hot weather. Thr park is situated in the sweet town of Capitan, where there are no strangers, and everyone is ready to help. The restroom was perfectly clean, and the museum was bright and very interesting. Dogs are not allowed in the garden walk.
