In late 1943, Carrabelle Beach and Dog Island, while they were a part of Camp Gordon Johnston, were used by the US Army 4th Infantry Division to train for the Normandy Invasion on D-Day, June 6th, 1944. The Amphibious Training Center had been officially closed, but it was reopened and staffed for the purpose of training for this important mission. Although the troops had trained for over three years, the amphibious training conducted on this site was the last step before shipping out to England for the invasion. On D-Day, the first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. On June 6, 2000, the Camp Gordon Johnston Association extracted a small amount of soil from this site and delivered it to the National 4th Infantry Division Association to be placed in the Association's monument in Arlington, VA. The US Department of Defense's World War II Commemoration Committee in 1995 named the Camp Gordon Johnston Association an official...

We fell in love this quaint little town! 45 minutes from Tallahassee and close to the ocean! The people here are the friendliest and kindest people I’ve ever met. You go into a store, like Ace Hardware, they take time to actually help you AND talk to you like a person! No one is in a hurry; everyone stops and talks to you! If you need help, you get help wether you ask or not! I feel like I’ve gone back in time about 100 years! This special little town is an example of how people should treat people and how life...

Great beach, other than the abnormally large number of seagulls from people feeding them, which is the people's fault, it's unbeatable. To fish it's best to fish with crabs. Otherwise the crabs will steal your bait. Great shells to collect. And if you want to catch sharks, which are cool to catch but you have to put back. This is your place. And the people that visit here like football if you want to toss at the beach. I've been here lots of times and know what I'm talking about unlike one...

Lots of parking, super easy access to the highway, lots of picnic benches and tables with shade (we didn't use them). There's clean warm water for rinsing and facilities (which we didn't use but we did use the water to rinse). The beach is clean and very quiet. Beautiful place to watch the sunset. Waves are not high and there's some seaweed, but it wasn't bad when we were there. You can find shells in the shape of butterflies.

Wod Wonderful little beach! My kids and i always enjoy stopping here to play in the sand and swim. The sand is excellent and the water varies from clear to most often cloudy and hard to see the bottom. It is very friendly and they have freshwater showers to rinse off afterwards. The waves are almost always small and perfect for small kids. Additionally they have small pacillions for eating or watching the ocean.
