This used to be a really lovely accessible respite, especially from our sweltering summer heat. Clearcut "forest management" has ruined the atmosphere and much of those refreshing cooler pockets of air you could delight in. They cut right up to the shoulder of the path along one side of the loop, not even leaving a buffer for shade, and this clearing or "diseased tree management" (yeah sure) has only spread in the past year-- especially along Old State. It's an eyesore. The views are pretty ragged in places and industrial sized machinery has compressed the soil, so regrowth will be less diverse. What a loss, because it used to be quite densely shaded and a real treat to have a paved trail run through such a beautiful scene with so many interesting plants, insects, animals. This does connect to the river walk, but that frequently smells of "water treatment" so. I hope the wind favors you. I've hit some patches where, even riding at a good pace, I cannot hold my breath long enough to make it through the stench. Not exactly what I want to be confronted with when I want to enjoy nature. For those afraid of spiders... they just want to hang out. Even if you bother them, they'll run away. But if left alone, they'll eat huge amounts of mosquitoes which, on the other hand, do bite....
Read moreMany miles-long trail system featuring concrete pad walkways. These are kept in near perfect shape. Part of the Cayce Riverwalk system, so you can get off track. This trail is on Google Maps though, just in case you take a wrong turn or two. The people I encounter are more friendly than normal. They supply bags for your dog waste. They also blow off the walkway constantly to keep it clean and free from leaves. Parking is adequate and is just inside the Dominion Energy complex. Dog friendly. Cayce Police are available and on site riding around in golf carts periodically. In addition they have police call boxes. Seems like a low crime area. The walkways are lit from dusk to dawn. The park says the hours are officially 6 AM to 9 PM, however. Bicycles are allowed, but nothing motorized on the walkway. Very historic 300 year old commerce route with displays along the way telling you this story and others. Highly...
Read moreMy family biked over 7 miles here yesterday and we all loved it! Even though it had been raining for several days prior, the trails were in good shape and safe. The woods and trails are beautiful and give you the sense that you're away in the mountains. We saw a deer and two snakes along the river bank along with your typical woodland birds and squirrels. The trails are wide enough to pass others without fear of running one another off the path. The park IS pet friendly. There are multiple parking areas, so do be sure to check signage if you're meeting up with others. This is an awesome (and not overly crowded) place to go on a date, have a family outing or just exercise alone. Although I have not personally been in the evenings I did notice that they have ample lighting and emergency call boxes. There are picnic tables and benches, so it's a lovely place to get your picnic on. I have been twice and definitely...
