This is my favourite trail in all of Austin. From the YMCA at one end to the small loop around a tree at the other nearly 7 miles away, it offers a gigantic amount of nature to see, much of which has small info. panels if you know where to look (some are heavily faded now) and a wide variety of it all too.
A good portion of the trail has a nice historical bent to it, with an intact old graveyard off the path to one side and, shortly after, a nice info. bridge about the history of the land in that area.
With the football, baseball and childrens play areas spread along the trail, as well at the lake with rowing available, there are plenty of different things to see and do if you aren't one of the many Austinites just out there for a stroll, run or cycle.
Toilets are available at the YMCA end of the park, not sure when they close though. The parks either side of Parmer also have bathrooms and water fountains and then the next park along after the dam also has restrooms and a water fountain. Beyond that you have another 1.5 to 2 miles before you hit another location with a fountain, not sure of restrooms, they may have some located near that community pool, but I do not believe that would have public access.
Parking at all major access areas is adequate.
Oh! And there is a 9 hole disc golf course near the skate park that is pretty brutal of you want some tunnels to throw down.
There are many off path cycling trails that take you through the landscape and along the waterway if you're after something different.
Typically, this trail is well kept and clean, you might get the odd lazy dog owner not clean up, but for a 7 mile trail that is heavily used, it's rare.
Please go enjoy the lake area once the wildflowers bloom, the bluebonnets that come up there...
Read moreThis was a great park to walk, run or bike. Most areas are paved with a few packed fine gravel spots. Mostly in the sun, but some shady areas and lots of benches and picnic and play areas. Depending on which trail you take: passes the lake - such pretty views, under the historic railway - where there is a historical marker, by the soccer fields, over the dam.... goes to several different parking areas and includes biking trails, hiking trails and easier paths as well. There are BBQ areas, it's easily accessible, parking is paved and it's safe and clean. Great park for kids and dogs. We took a push wheelchair without any problem (if your passenger isn't TOO heavy and you are reasonably athletic). DO be careful if you go over the dam tho, it's steep coming down with a hairpin turn at the bottom. Electric chairs would make it more easily. There are a few spots with a bit of water over the cement, but not deep or muddy, just leafy. We went about 3 miles, but you can go MUCH further (or LESS- depending on your preference and tolerance). Not super crowded for a Sun afternoon either. Overall a great time! I highly...
Read moreMiles of trail. Some parts are dirt and some paved. Beautiful place to go on a nature hike. The trail runs along parts of the creek and right after a good rain the water is briskly flowing and quite nice to watch. There is a nice big lake to run around with ducks to feed. Several playgrounds to entertain the kids at. One playground, Champion, has a dinosaur the kids can dig out in the sand and a whale skeleton splash pad that I still have yet to see turned on but looks really fun. This trail can be busy so if you are running or biking you will need to be courteous and pass on the left and politely announce your presence so you do not surprise or startle people out there walking. The trail is a both carrier and...
