This is the only trail(s) I enjoy in the Croatan National Forest. All the others are nothing more than walking in woods. Not this one!
There is a marquis at the trailhead with map and lengths of the trail. It's a longer loop if you stay right at 1.3 miles. The trail itself is mostly flat, packed sand with occasional roots. Easy.
You will walk through some shaded forest as well as boardwalks, both metal and wooden, which are really nice. The views of the White Oak River are excellent and scenic. Expect to see birds of all types, like the white ibis, as well as crabs and skittish deer.

It's wetland/marsh so I wouldn't let kids play in the water; Lots of oyster shells & broken glass in/around mud/water at the boat ramp. I actually saw a herd of deer as I was leaving the other day. They have a boat ramp, a camping area for RVs with full bathroom facilities and another bathroom for the public to use near the trail.
