There is a lot of history on the east coast of the United States that many people never see or experience. This was not a small battle as I have always thought. 30,000 men on both sides of the conflict fought here. Sadly, most of the battlefield is now homes unlike Gettysburg which is well preserved. Here in Chadds Ford Washington made his headquarters. Washington was trying to prevent General Howe from marching from the Chesapeake Bay to Philadelphia to take control of our capital in 1777. You will visit to historic homes and the museum on the ground. The museum has in his collection one of the iron tip stakes that was once buried in the Delaware River to prevent the British from sailing up the Delaware to take Philadelphia. It was washed up during hurricane Sandy. You will learn a lot about Washington's valiant stand against the British and his retreat back into Chester County.
Before you go, watch a video on YouTube about the Battle of Brandywine Creek to better understand what you will be seeing and experiencing.
After your tour, turn left and go down about a quarter mile and have lunch at the Chadds Ford Tavern. When you walk in you will think that you were in an 18th century tavern. Lots of dark wood on the floors and walls. If you like the sports bar scene go to the right. If you want peace and quiet then asked to be seated in the dining room...
Read moreBrandywine was the largest battle of the entire Revolutionary War, and one of the bloodiest. It is also the one I am most interested in. This battlefield is small but very pristine and worth visiting for those interested in the Revolutionary War, although it is vastly overshadowed when compared to Valley Forge or Independence Hall. I wish so badly it was a national battlefield because it would have so much more and not have the same financial struggles it does. The museum is still really good, with a first class gift shop and film. If you do visit the more famous 18th century sites around Philadelphia, don't skip Brandywine. Remember, what was signed in ink in Independence Hall was signed in blood on the fields...
