Mount Lassen is a towering testament to the volcanic origins of this region, and an imposing sight from the trailhead on the shores of Lake Helen. In truth however, hiking the two mile (each way) trail to Lassen Peak which switchbacks its way gradually up the mountain is only a moderate workout.
Bagging this peak is best done on a clear day to appreciate the views below and out toward the horizon, as wildlife on the trail is sparse once you've hiked above the last of the treetops. The route continues and the only remaining wildlife you'll see from here to the summit will be the occasional chipmunk scurrying across your path. Views from the peak are nothing short of spectacular on a clear day, stretching as far as the massive snowcapped Mount Shasta over seventy miles away.
Being one of the busiest hikes in the park it's worth tackling Lassen Peak early in the day, avoiding any crowds and also avoiding climbing during the warmest part of the day.

Read moreReached the Lassen Peak trailhead little before noon the Sunday of Labor Day weekend after summiting Brokeoff Mountain first in the morning. Although the parking lot is huge, it was absolutely packed, and we found a spot on the dirt next to the road right before exiting the lot. The trail itself is easy to follow. It is strenuous - I recorded 5.5 miles with 2800 feet elevation gain, and it took me just under 3 hours. I also spent some time exploring the crater area right beneath the summit, so that added some extra distance. It was very very windy throughout, so definitely recommend bringing an extra layer and gloves and lip balm. There was some snow near the summit but nothing tricky. There are a lot of informative signs along the way, and it was fun to read them all. Plenty of people on the trail, but it's also wide enough to overtake easily, so no...
Read moreA moderately difficult hike. 2.5 miles up and 2.5 miles down. Elevation 100ft/mile. Lots of slippery rocks along the way. Make sure to watch your step and wear good hiking shoes. Surprisingly the hike had few snow trails even during the month of July where the temperature was over 80f. We had lots of fun though it was scary to start as it was my first time to hike on snow. Luckily I found few bamboo sticks that literally saved my life as I had several slippery spots and I had an avg shoes. I was not prepared for this hike to be honest. But I had my brother who was well prepared with proper shoes and also he helped me in some parts of the hike. A thrilling and challenging hike. I saw plenty of old people over the age of 60’s and some time 70’s doing the hike. What a fun experience. Also the views along the way was mesmerizing...
