Getting there is part of the adventure—it’s an approximately 1.5-mile drive on a sandy wash to reach the trailhead. The sand is quite deep in some areas, so all-wheel drive is highly recommended to navigate the route safely.
Walking through the narrow, winding slot canyon was like stepping into another world. Especially at 3 pm when the sun was casting so many shadows. The hike to the end of the canyon and back took about 1.5 hours round trip, and the stunning rock formations and unique landscape kept me mesmerized the entire way. The photos do not do it justice!
While dogs aren’t allowed, Richard, my service animal, accompanied me and handled the trail like a pro. I’m especially glad I did this hike in January, when the desert temperatures were mild and the snakes were safely hibernating—a perfect time to explore this iconic trail.
The tight passageways, towering sandstone walls, and natural beauty make this a must-do adventure for anyone visiting the park. It’s a moderate hike that rewards you with breathtaking scenery and a sense of wonder. Highly recommended for an...
Read moreThis is the trailhead/parking area for The Slot, a popular hike through a slot canyon. Please note that this is part of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and you must follow all state park rules (ie: no OHVs even on dirt roads, no drones, all the common sense/decency rules that keep people from ruining it). There are apparently several different ways to start this trail so consult your guide & choose accordingly. The trail was nicely shaded by the canyon walls in most parts & the canyon is absolutely beautiful. However: people need to pick up their trash! There are NO FACILITIES so you need to pack out what you pack in and follow proper procedure for human waste. Namely: bury solid waste at least 6” deep. This is a great place for a short and easy hike that’s accessible to most people. The problem with that is that not everyone is being courteous to their fellow visitors. I wish we had brought a trash bag and gloves so we could have removed the...
Read moreReally cool hike but definitely pay attention to the extremely small markings at the edge of the parking lot which direct you to the entrance. Was a little difficult to find at first and went on the wrong path twice before a helpful bystander pointed us in the right direction. Try to ask around in the parking lot if you need help.
Once you park in the large free parking lot, the trail is an extremely easy trail as long as you're ok fitting through tight spaces. Be prepared as some slots are only 2-3 ft wide and are not even so the rockface is quite textured. Lots of opportunity for cool pictures and there's some decent cover from the sun in some locations as it's located "underground". It's a little bit far from the beaten path and was quite a drive over but from the small town near the visitor center, there's a super nice flat stretch of road that is an absolute joy to drive on. Come check...
